The Town of Whitby is a community in transformation that is located in the heart of Durham Region in the eastern Greater Toronto Area. Whitby is the second-largest municipality in the region and one of the fastest-growing communities in Canada. Located on Lake Ontario and only an hour east of Toronto, the population of Whitby is expected to grow from 140,000 to more than 200,000 by 2031. Reporting to, and under the direction of, the Supervisor of By-law and Animal Services, the Animal Services Officer is responsible for providing excellent and efficient customer service in all aspects of the operations of Animal Services. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:enforcement of all applicable Animal Control By-laws and provincial legislation;
humane capture, control and emergency care for wildlife and domestic/exotic animals;
the care and well-being of animals housed at the municipal animal shelter;
providing education, advice and assistance to the public;
general administrative duties;
maintaining the municipal animal shelter in a clean and sanitary condition; and,
other duties as may be assigned.
Who You Are
Our Animal Services team is looking for a self-motivated, solutions-oriented team player. You convey your thoughts clearly and concisely, both written and verbally. You listen attentively and ask questions for clarification and understanding. Using sound judgment, you demonstrate tact, diplomacy and sound discretion when working with the general public on issues of a sensitive and potentially controversial nature.
You're always happy to learn new things and to help build a working environment that encourages and cultivates new ideas. You foster a collaborative team environment among co-workers, and work well both independently and as part of a team. You solve problems by identifying, gathering and processing relevant information to determine possible solutions, evaluate them and make recommendations.
What You Bring To Our Team
As the successful applicant, you must possess:a post-secondary diploma from a recognized community college in police foundations, law and security administration, veterinary technician, or justice studies or an undergraduate degree in justice studies, criminology, animal behaviour/sciences and welfare;
possess a minimum of three (3) years of related law enforcement and animal care experience;
working knowledge of by-laws and related legislation;
working knowledge of the care, behaviour and keeping of animals;
working knowledge and understanding of computers and related applications, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook); and
the ability and willingness to respond outside of regular working hours on an "on-call" rotation.
Successful candidates will be required to provide a satisfactory police record check to the Corporation as a condition of employment; as well as to hold and maintain a valid Province of Ontario Class "G" Driver's License and qualify for the Town's Safe Driver Program criteria.
Successful candidate must be physically able to carry out the duties of the position including driving, walking, standing, sitting, bending and computer inputting, some of these activities are required for longer periods of time. The working conditions for this position include the requirement to work frequently in an outdoor environment in all weather conditions;

Flex hours, including days, afternoons, and nights, forty (40) hours per week. Shifts may be scheduled between the hours of 12:00 a.m. and 11:59 p.m., Sunday to Saturday.
