The Opportunity





We are seeking a part-time, permanent Animal Nutrition Food Preparer, who under supervision, will prepare and provide animal diets for a diverse collection of animals as directed. This includes ensuring supplies, inventory, equipment and facilities are maintained in good order according to quality standards of cleanliness, animal food preparation, and food hygiene that meet or exceed accredited zoological practices.



The incumbent will be responsible for oversight of the professional animal care team of Animal Care Professionals with input into the planning of exhibits and selection species. The incumbent will adhere to all health and safety regulations, legislation and policies.


Responsibilities




Unload and document deliveries of bulk foodstuffs. Cut, weigh, measure and portion individual animal diets according to established guidelines; document records of activities. Assist in monitoring foodstuffs for any hazards to animals and Animal Care staff. Support the implementation of enrichment programs as directed. Clean and sanitize food preparation tools, dishes and related areas. Sweep, mop, and clean floors. Empty trash, compost and recycling from containers and change trash liners. Thoroughly clean and sanitize walls, handles, doors, shelves, fridges and freezers. Inventory food and supplies and notify Animal Nutrition in a timely manner to ensure adequate levels are available. Re-stock and distribute supplies as requested to appropriate buildings. Keep storage areas organized and free of clutter. Comply with animal quarantine policies.

Required Qualifications and Experience




A high school diploma and/or GED equivalent. Must possess a valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver's License. Some experience performing general labour and operational experience; a demonstrated interest in the zoo industry or previous food preparation experience is considered an asset. Previous experience working in teams and dealing with internal customers. Basic technology and computer skills.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions




Physically demanding and repetitive tasks. Must be able to perform physically strenuous work outdoors in all types of weather. Combination of standing, gripping/handling of tools, bending, squatting, pushing, lifting, kneeling, and walking for extended periods. Frequently handling heavy loads of up to 45-50 lbs. Must be able to push/pull 50-250 lbs. Noise exposure from operations, mechanical equipment and animal vocalizations. Exposure to strong scents from animals and chemical products. Contact with plants, animals, food or chemicals which may cause allergic reactions. Working with chopping/cutting equipment such as knives, food processors, and meat saws requires safety awareness.
