Reporting to the Animal Care Manager, the Animal Health Technician (AHT) will coordinate all aspects of animal health within the animal centre. This will include overseeing medical intakes for felines and canines that are new to the shelter and ongoing health assessments, conducting diagnostic testing and assigning medical treatment plans in accordance with our standard operating procedures. This position relies heavily on the administrative component of medical record keeping and scheduling.
Position Schedule:
8-16 hours per week 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, 1 or 2 weekday or weekend day (exact day of the week tbd) on-site at the GTHS Animal Centre in Collingwood, and some occasional in-person events in the community. Occasional evenings, after-hours, and off-site work will be required occasionally.

Roles and Responsibilities:
Animal Health
Ensure health and wellness is maintained for all GTHS animals working within organizational SOPs and treatment plans
Conducts intake examinations within 24 hours on all animals entering the GTHS program following associated medical procedures
Work with Animal Care Manager, Care Coordinators, and Director of Medicine/Veterinarian to ensure optimum health is maintained within the shelter and foster environment
Monitor GTHS animals to ensure that medical treatment plans and prescriptions are accurately followed
Prepare and interpret diagnostics as required including urinalysis, ear swabs, etc.
Maintain detailed and complete medical records for each GTHS animal using our database system and ensuring that adopters have full access to medical records
Ensure medical memos, exams and treatments are complete and accurate in Petpoint and updated in real time
Ensure that all medical assessments, conditions, and disclosures are communicated tostaff, volunteers, and adopters
Ensure that yourself and your teamwork in a safe, healthy, and supportive environment in accordance with all appropriate legislation and regulations
Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
Post-secondary education in Animal Science, Veterinary Technologies, Animal Care, or equivalent work experience
A graduate from an OAVT accredited college

Solid understanding of shelter medicine, or experience in a shelter setting, would be ideal

Strong time management skills demonstrated through past work
Technology:
Strong computer proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite of programs (MS Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and data entry with keen attention to detail and accuracy. Google Sheets experience is an asset
Knowledge of or experience with PetPoint database systems would be an asset
Licensing & Transportation:
Clean driving record, current Full Ontario driver's license - Class G, and ability to drive the GTHS cargo van to off-site locations on occasion is a condition of employment

Working Conditions
This role requires work with animals on site (feline and canine) in a high-volume shelter environment. This position necessitates regular, hands-on work with animals of diverse breeds, sizes, and behaviors. The work environment inherently contains common animal-related allergens, including but not limited to fur, dander, and cleaning agents. This role also requires prolonged sitting (up to 8 hours/day), computer usage for extended periods, as well as prolonged standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds as necessary. Additional duties may include performing physical tasks related to animal handling, cleaning, and general facility maintenance. This role may require working alone and closing the animal centre. As such, you are able to perform all the essential duties of the position in such an environment.
