Job Summary:



The Animal Health Care Aide will assist licensed veterinarians and registered veterinary technicians in delivering high-quality care to companion animals. Key responsibilities include collecting and preparing biological specimens, performing routine diagnostic tests, assisting with clinical and surgical procedures, and providing post-treatment care. This is a non-registered position; all clinical tasks are carried out under the direct supervision of a licensed veterinarian in compliance with provincial regulatory requirements. The role also includes front desk and client service duties to support efficient clinic operations.

Duties and responsibilities may include some or all of the following:



The successful candidate will assist licensed veterinarians and registered veterinary technicians in providing medical care to companion animals, with a focus on collecting and preparing specimens, performing routine diagnostic tests, and supporting surgical and medical procedures. Duties will also include patient care, client communication, and administrative support to ensure smooth clinical operations, and may include:

Collect, label, sort, and prepare biological specimens (e.g., blood, urine, fecal) for in-house testing or transport to external diagnostic laboratories.

Log and validate patient samples and maintain accurate chain-custody documentation.

Set up, clean, and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment for diagnostic use.

Prepare chemical reagents and other solutions for use in testing.

Conduct routine laboratory tests such as hematology and urinalysis and record results in patient files.

Perform quality assurance checks on laboratory procedures and equipment.

Assist with patient preparation for surgical and medical procedures, including IV-line setup under supervision.

Support wound care including cleaning, bandaging, and post-operative monitoring.

Administer medications, injections, sedatives, and anesthetics under direct veterinary supervision.

Monitor the condition and comfort of hospitalized animals and report observations to the veterinary team.

Provide daily care such as feeding, cleaning, and general monitoring for animals under treatment.

Educate clients on post-treatment care, medications, nutrition, and preventive health measures.

Maintain accurate patient records and monitor inventory of clinical and administrative supplies.

Ensure cleanliness and organization of treatment areas, exam rooms, and common spaces. Perform reception duties including answering calls, scheduling appointments, and processing payments.

All duties are performed under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian, in accordance with Ontario's veterinary regulatory standards.

Qualifications:



Completion of a post-secondary degree or diploma in animal health or a related field

3+ years of practical experience in veterinary clinics, with responsibilities including sample collection, lab testing, animal restraint, wound care, and client education

Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and infection control protocols is an asset.

Familiarity with common veterinary treatments, medications, and nutrition for companion animals

Hands-on experience assisting with surgery preparation, monitoring patients, and supporting anesthetic procedures under supervision.

Experience working in a fast-paced clinical or veterinary setting.

Proficient in front desk duties, including appointment scheduling, client communication, and billing.

Strong interpersonal and organizational skills with the ability to communicate effectively in English and Portuguese

Physically capable of performing duties involving animal handling, lifting, and long periods of standing.

Demonstrated empathy, attention to detail, and teamwork in a clinical environment.

This position does not require provincial registration or licensing.
