Job Description

The Preclinical Research Facility at the Sunnybrook Research Institute (SRI) is proud to uphold the highest standards for the ethical care and use of animals in research, in accordance with the standards set by SRI, as well as the external guidelines set by the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC), and the Ontario Animals for Research Act. The Preclinical Research Facility is an essential support for many different avenues of research that are integral to Sunnybrook's vision of Inventing the Future of Healthcare. The Animal Facility Attendant is an integral part of the research animal care team, providing daily support to ensure the highest standards of animal care.




Summary of Duties




Changing food, water, and bedding according to established facility schedules Daily health monitoring and general husbandry of laboratory animal species Notifying the Animal Health Technician(s), Veterinarian, and/or Facility Manager of any health or welfare concerns Communicating with the Veterinary care team, Principal Investigators, and lab staff Washing cages, racks, and bottles Operate and work with specialized equipment such as biological safety cabinets, laminar flow hoods, ventilated racks, tunnel washer, and autoclaves Reception and preparation of incoming research animals Restocking and request ordering of supplies as needed Wear personal protective equipment as appropriate Cleaning machines, area floors, walls, and equipment Protect the interest of the research animals by ensuring compliance with regulatory guidelines (CCAC, OMAFRA)





Qualifications & Skills




Graduate of or currently enrolled in a Veterinary Technician Program or Animal Care program (required) Registered Laboratory Animal Technician (RLAT) certification from the Canadian Association for Laboratory Animal Science (CALAS)

Preference given to applicants with experience with animals in a research setting Familiarity with CCAC Guidelines, OMAFRA Animals for Research Act Ability to understand and problem solve issues Comfortable working with various species (large and small) Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively as a team member Excellent observational skills, attention to detail, communication skills and interpersonal skills





Additional Information




This position involves working daytime shifts (7am-3pm) on weekdays and weekends on an as needed basis. The ideal candidate should have availability for at least 2 weekends (4 weekend shifts) per month.
