POSITION: Animal Control Officer 2

STATUS: Permanent; Full-Time

SHIFT: Sunday to Thursday. 35 hours per week. Various shifts.

LOCATION: Burnaby, BC

CLASSIFICATION: CUPE 1622

WAGE: $26.59 per hour

About the Position:

The position calls for an effective communicator that can handle difficult discussions and provide conflict resolution with diplomacy. The officer will enforce applicable municipal bylaws and provincial laws/regulations within the City of Burnaby. This includes investigating complaints regarding animal related bylaw violations such as aggressive, stray or barking dogs and animal cruelty complaints. Ensuring a focus on animal welfare, public safety, and enhancing the human-animal bond through education, this position ensures all complaints are concluded to the satisfaction of the Burnaby Animal Centre Manager.

Some specific duties:

This position is also responsible for the capture and transport of animals with various behavior (including aggressive) and candidates should have sound knowledge of the care and handling of different species. This position will also work with others at the branch to maintain our shelter in a clean, sanitary and efficient manner on an on-going basis. This may include cleaning kennels, moving heavy stock, providing animals with a proper diet, and administering prescribed medications.

Qualifications you need to have:

• High school diploma or equivalent

• Valid Class N or 5 BC Drivers\' License and driver\'s abstract

• Demonstrable interest in all aspects of animal welfare and animal handling skills

• A sound knowledge of animals, their breeds, behaviour and more common diseases

• Two years practical experience or equivalent

• Completion of Bylaw Level 1 at the Justice Institute is preferred

• Completion of Animal Control Level 1 at Langara College is an asset

• Knowledge of the geography of the City of Burnaby

• Demonstrated ability to organize work, meet priorities and to work within a demanding work schedules with minimal supervision (Effective Time Management)

• Excellent communication skills and ability to work with internal and external stakeholders at all levels in a positive manner

• Ability to keep information confidential

• Demonstrated ability in stress management

• Ability to work co-operatively as a team player and demonstrate well-developed interpersonal skills

• Strong computer skills; proficient in MS Word and Outlook

• Criminal Record Check

• Position is physically demanding and includes heavy lifting, pushing and pulling which requires an individual with the ability to maintain a level of fitness and endurance to fulfill the required duties.

• Ability to work weekends on a flexible schedule

Burnaby COVID-19 Vaccine Mandatory Requirement

As this position is performing work under a contract with the City of Burnaby and will be working out of a facility owned by the municipality, it falls under the City of Burnaby mandatory vaccination policy; therefore, candidates must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to be considered for this role.
