About the Role:

Global BC is looking for a temporary, full-time Anchor/Producer to join the #1 newsroom in Western Canada for a 12 month contract. Reporting to the Global BC News Director/Station Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for anchoring Global News Hour at 6 and 11pm on weekends, and reporting, producing and delivering news content on Global BC, BC1, and 980 CKNW during the weekdays as needed. This position will regularly require work on weekends and may involve a variety or shifts including early mornings, evenings, and stat holidays. This is a Group 5 position under the current collective agreement.

You\'ll be working on things like:
The following is an outline of some but not all of the primary functions and responsibilities for this position:

  • Anchor news on Global BC and BC1 as required;
  • In coordination with the weekend team, drive editorial direction of Global News Hour at 6 and 11pm;
  • Reporting on original stories, including leading and breaking news for Global BC, BC1, 980 CKNW and Online;
  • Write news copy for on-air and online, including newsbreaks, story leads and bumpers for news programs;
  • Live hits as required for Global BC, BC1, and 980 CKNW;
  • Initiate and monitor story development, and maintain quality of production;
  • Monitor all news sources, including feeds, wires and social media;
  • Chase breaking news stories, including coordination of live coverage, setting up interviews for broadcast, and facilitating pictures and video for online coverage;
  • Communicate breaking or changing news situations;
  • Assist in the coordination of reporters, editors and cameras when necessary;
  • Line up and produce newscasts for Global BC and BC1;
  • Position will require work on regular weekends and may involve a variety or shifts including early mornings, evenings, and stat holidays.
If you have the following...we want to hear from you!
  • Post-secondary education in Broadcast Journalism;
  • 10 years major market journalism and anchoring experience;
  • Experience anchoring live breaking news and performing live hits as an anchor;
  • Demonstrated capability in driving editorial direction;
  • Proven ability to write accurate, concise, creative broadcast copy and put together news line ups;
  • Experience meeting multiple deadlines for broadcast and online;
  • Ability to develop sources, contacts and research original stories;
  • Experience in diverse and inclusive journalism, and reflecting those voices in newscasts;
  • Knowledge of the Indigenous population in BC, trauma reporting, and storytelling through the lens of Truth and Reconciliation;
  • Extensive knowledge of and contacts in Metro Vancouver\'s diverse communities;
  • Willingness to adapt to rapidly changing technology and new online skills in a multi-faceted digital news operation;
  • Familiarity with current state of online news reporting and publishing;
  • Familiarity and ease in using social media;
  • Excellent people skills with the ability to work independently, effectively and cooperatively in a team environment;
  • Experience in representing the company at various community and charity events and connecting with the audience;
  • Other duties as required.
