Job Description


The Analytical Chemist \xe2\x80\x93 Mass Spectrometrist will join the Elemental Analysis Section (EAS) of the Analytical Chemistry Branch (ACB). The technical capability of this Team includes two areas. One of them is the ICP-MS/ICP-AES Facility for elemental and isotopic analyses analyzing multi-elements in diverse matrices. The other area focuses on the Hot Vacuum Extraction \xe2\x80\x93 Mass Spectrometry (HVEMS) and Vacuum Fusion-Mass Spectrometry (VF-MS) for analyzing gaseous elements (H(D), O, N, He) in metal and alloy samples. The analysis of gas composition (hydrogen, helium, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, argon, krypton, and xenon) in gas samples are also part of the work. The main mandate/function of the incumbent\xe2\x80\x99s position is to assist with the day-to-day operation and supervision of the laboratories and laboratory staff. The section facilities provide analytical services and support to a large number of CNL programs and projects within the organizations of S&T (Science & Technology), HSSE (Health, Safety, Security and Environment), ERM (Environment Remediation Management), Commercial, and Regulatory Compliance Programs.

This position will require knowledge and experience in analytical chemistry, laboratory supervision, laboratory operations and organization, team management, and customer liaison. The incumbent also needs a fundamental understanding of chemistry techniques and instrumentation, to lead the development, validation and documentation of methods to support customer needs. A component of this role will also be to oversee, develop and explore opportunities for expanding instrument and/or procedural capabilities in support of internal research projects, external contracts, and to apply chemistry techniques to solve various technical challenges within the nuclear industry.

The Analytical Chemistry Branch provides a comprehensive range of sample analysis support for all programs at CNL. This includes a variety of elemental, isotopic and material analyses using mass spectrometry, chromatography, atomic emission spectrometry, spectrophotometry, infrared spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry, radiochemistry, and many other analytical techniques. There is considerable synergy between these groups and thus strong teamwork qualities is required of the incumbent.

DUTIES

The Analytical Chemist \xe2\x80\x93 Mass Spectrometrist will have responsibilities to supervise the day-to-day operation of the laboratory facilities and the assigned technical staff. The incumbent will lead and participate in the development/optimization of new methods. The duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Lead method development and method validation initiatives on various instruments which may include but are not limited to ICP-MS/OES, HVEMS, and VFMS
  • Review workloads of technical staff and set operational priorities
  • Approve work procedures, including providing technical guidance to technical staff on chemical/analytical techniques, and performing quality verification activities
  • Provide technical guidance and leadership for technical staff, including performing yearly performance assessments and 6-month coaching
  • Ensure that all activities are carried out with due diligence relative to established Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) requirements, applicable environmental and safety regulations and requirements (industrial and radiological), and company policies and procedures (including relevant labour contracts)
  • Coordinate on-the-job training of technical staff and authorize Work Permits for work performed within the facilities
  • Interact with customers, both internal and external to the company
  • Provide technical guidance during troubleshooting activities and authorize the repair and maintenance of equipment
  • Prepare and develop new methodologies for project-specific needs
  • Experience with a Laboratory Information Management System and excel macros are considered an asset
  • Produce, review and/or approve technical and/or progress reports (including standard analysis reports)
  • Explore opportunities for expanding instrument and/or procedural capabilities, including commercial or S&T contracts
  • Provide assistance to the Section Head and the Branch Manager when requested
QUALIFICATIONS
  • PhD or M.Sc in Science from a university of recognized standing; PhD in Inorganic Analytical Chemistry is preferred but other Analytical experience will also be considered
  • Experience (2-5 years) in analytical method development, laboratory supervision, laboratory operations and organization, team management, and customer liaison, (2-5 years) is an asset
  • In depth knowledge in at least one of the following areas: Samples preparation including dissolution/separation/pre-concentration and ICP-MS and ICP-OES analysis of elements and isotopes in diverse types of samples, or mass spectrometric analysis of gases in gas samples and analysis of gaseous elements as impurities in metal samples by commercial instruments or in-house-built instruments
  • Experience with instrumentation, electronics, computer coding and vacuum technology is considered an asset
  • Demonstrated communication, organization and time management skills are highly desirable
  • Experience in the application of standard QA/QC procedures, with experience in an ISO 17025 accredited lab environment being highly desirable
  • Experience in the development, validation and documentation of analytical methods is required
  • Good oral and written communication skills are essential to the performance of the job duties. The incumbent must be able to effectively interact with staff at various levels (technical, management, and customer) to meet operational objectives
  • May be required to deliver oral presentations at technical meetings and attend appropriate technical workshops
  • Prepare new project proposals and lead projects with guidance and supervision from the Section Head
  • Scientific curiosity and a willingness to pursue novel solutions is a definite asset
  • Work experience in a commercial laboratory environment is considered an asset
  • Work experience handling radiological samples is considered an asset
  • Provide pre-job work briefs and QA/QC instructions and produce a variety of documentation, including operations reports, and scientific reports and journal papers
  • Demonstrate effective team leadership and team building skills
  • Strong organizational and communication skills and the ability to work within a team are essential to innovate and to meet project timelines
