works closely with the Trauma Coordinator, Operations Director, and Medical Director to meet all the project coordination and data analysis needs and is responsible for the coordination of data entry in the Ontario Trauma Registry.
The Trauma Program Registry provides appropriate, accurate and timely analyses and interpretation of surgical and trauma care data to the Critical Care Services Ontario, Ministry of Health and Long Term Care (MOHLTC), Canadian Institute of Health Information (CIHI), physicians and health care professionals at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH). In addition to this important role in patient care, the department also participates in the provision of data for medical, nursing and other health care provider education, performance, and quality improvement initiatives that may also include the Regional Trauma Network (RTN).

Knowledge and Skills:
Completion of a Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management, or other related field required, clinical background preferred;
Completion of an accredited postsecondary Health Information Management diploma an asset;
One (1-2) years related experience working in a health care environment preferred;
Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Products, e.g., Word, Excel, Access, Visio and PowerPoint, required;

Education:

Responsibilities:
Provide data analysis support for the trauma program to facilitate effective planning, decision-making, and project progress.
Maintain responsibility for analyzing, interpreting, developing, and preparing timely/accurate ad hoc, monthly, quarterly, and yearly statistical data.
Ensure data quality and identify trends to highlight areas requiring further discussion.
Assignment of other required codes and scales. These include but not limited to; CPT codes; ICD-10/external causes codes; Procedure codes; AIS 05 injury scaling
Support collaboration with the RTN by providing ongoing analyses of hospital data for quality assurance and planning.
Provide ongoing analysis of regional trauma data to the hospital, CCSO, and Ontario Ministry of Health for purposes of quality assurance, planning, and funding as needed.
Reviewing charts and determining proper ICD-10-CA/CCI and CPT codes when documentation is not clear
Responsible for attending program meetings and/or program related webinars.
Generation of reports related to performance improvement and patient safety initiatives and statistical tracking.
Reporting data discrepancies to the Trauma Program Leadership team.
Develop program presentations and data related reports as required by the program.
Work collaboratively with Decision Support and Data Management to ensure data is up to date and accurate.
Maintains the integrity of highly confidential and sensitive information/communication.
Ability to Support the program's strategic directions and priorities.
Performing statistical management, interpretation and other organizational responsibilities while acting as a primary contact for our Trauma Program interpreting information and ensuring the integrity and efficacy of surgical and trauma data, while also informing corporate and program decision initiatives;
Communicating effectively with hospital wide departments, building a relationship to ensure corporate and program clinical objectives are met;
Accurately code and abstract clinical and administrative data, using standardized national and international classification systems and abstracting software, from patient health records in accordance with international (ACS), national (CIHI), and provincial (MOHLTC) standards. The coding specialist ensures coding/data collection accurately reflects chart documentation and participates in regular quality assurance activities.
Develops, prepares and submits CIHI Ontario Trauma Registry (OTR), Decision Support, and/or Critical Care Services Ontario (CCSO) clinical process and outcome indicator data, in a timely manner, acting as a key contact for providing assistance with data clarity and interpretation;
Performs clinical data analyses for trauma and surgical care areas responding to data queries to support effective and efficient management strategies, identifying areas where our programs and clinical care are exemplary, as expected and requiring improvement;
Reviews and interprets patient information, and applies relevant coding classifications including ICD10CA, CCI, AAAM AIS and/or CPT methodology for capturing all diagnoses, interventions and procedures following Canadian and International Coding Standards;
Access patient's record electronically via Meditech, and external applications such as Med 2020, EMS call record thoroughly analyzing all documentation and ensuring registration data is consistent with clinical documentation;
Applies coding skills to code procedures, diagnosis and/or injuries using multiple software applications including WinRec (Med2020);
Performs monthly QA of coded data correcting issues provided to them by Manager or Decision Support Services;
Performs analysis of charts to ensure completion;
Participates in data quality audits to ensure correct assignment of codes and optimization data capture for hospital (Trauma base funding) and others as required;
Monthly Data quality audits and ISS reconciliation with Decision Support;
Provides support for research and quality improvement projects by identifying, monitoring and tracking clinical data;
Accountability:
Accountability and reporting relationship to Decision Support with accountabilities to the Trauma Program leadership.
* System-level accountability to Regional Trauma Network to meet data entry/analysis needs of the trauma program and related activities for the hospital.
