Ashmont School, located in Ashmont, Alberta is a K-12 school with approximately 465 students.
Role Overview:
The ASL Interpreter will support Ashmont School by facilitating communication and promoting inclusion through American Sign Language. This role requires a strong understanding of the deaf and hard of hearing population, professional conduct, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
General Duties:
Providing sign language interpretation of curriculum and information as presented by teacher(s) and peers.
Provide language modelling in American Sign Language to the student and communication partners.
Facilitating communication between Deaf or Hard of Hearing students and others through sign language and visuals to bridge communication gaps and promote inclusivity.
Communicate with students and staff, and work collaboratively with the Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Speech Language Pathologist, and school team
Maintain professional conduct, punctuality, and appearance.
Encouraging cooperation and demonstrating a positive influence with students to achieve social, academic, and behavioral goals.
Proficiency in matching modes of sign communication with the needs of individual student(s).
Collaborating with other professionals and paraprofessionals as needed.
Be physically capable of meeting the demands of the role.
Attend team meetings
Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors or program managers.
Qualifications & Education:
American Sign Language fluency (qualified candidates without American Sign Language will be considered, with the expectation that they will gain competency)
Post-secondary education preferred.
Related coursework/experience in child development, special needs, and deafness is preferred.
Familiarity with alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) tools is an asset.
Knowledge and sensitivity in Deaf Culture.
Understanding/knowledge of the specific learning needs of students with hearing loss.
Strong coaching and mentoring abilities.
Effective communication and time management skills.
Positive attitude, mature work ethic, and ability to work independently and in teams.
Strong organizational and prioritization skills.
Valid driver's license.
Preferred Skills:
Willingness to learn and adapt.
Receptive to feedback and collaboration.
Strong computer and documentation skills.
