Applied R&D (AR) consists of target-oriented research either with the goal of solving a particular problem / answering a specific question or for multi-discipline design, development, and implementation of hardware, software, and systems including maintenance support. Supplies techno-economic consulting to clients. AR work is characterised by its detailed and complex nature in order to systematically combine existing knowledge and practices to further developing and incrementally improving products, operational processes, and customer-specific feature development.
Subfamily Description
R&D Architecture (RDA) comprises capturing of business, operational, technical, and / or non functional requirements from the stakeholders and the delivery of an architecture to meet the defined needs and constraints. Contains processing of use case and feature requirements into conceptual models, operational scenarios, technical requirements, and functional descriptions. RDA has a broad system and product architecture competence and ecosystem understanding.
Responsibilities:
Architectural Leadership

  • Define and evolve end-to-end architecture for Mobile Core and Network Management platforms enabling autonomous networks.
  • Drive cloud-native, microservices-based designs ensuring scalability, resilience, and security.
  • Establish reference architectures and best practices for integration with OSS/BSS, orchestration, and AI/ML frameworks.
Innovation & Product Vision
  • Shape the future of Nokia's products by influencing technology strategy and product roadmaps.
  • Lead technical strategy for zero-touch operations, closed-loop automation, and intent-based networking.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies (5G SA, 6G, edge computing, network slicing) and incorporate them into Nokia's innovation pipeline.
Hands-On Engineering & Prototyping
  • Actively design, code, and build prototypes to validate concepts and accelerate innovation.
  • Develop proof-of-concepts for next-generation network automation and management solutions.
  • Mentor engineering teams on high-performance software development, API design, and cloud-native deployments.
Collaboration & Influence
  • Work closely with product units, research teams, and standards bodies to align on innovation and interoperability.
  • Represent Nokia in technical forums, open-source communities, and industry standards organizations.
Qualifications:
  • Education:
  • Master's or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
  • Experience:
  • 15+ years in telecom software engineering, with deep expertise in telecom and network management
  • Proven track record as a technical architect for large-scale, distributed systems.
  • Hands-on experience with Kubernetes, service mesh, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud-native frameworks.
  • Strong knowledge of network protocols, virtualization, and AI/ML for network automation.
  • Skills:
  • Exceptional ability to translate complex technical concepts into actionable designs.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as C/C++, Go, Python, etc. and container orchestration.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring capabilities.
  • Contributions to open-source projects or standards bodies (3GPP, ETSI, ONAP).
  • Experience with autonomous network frameworks, intent-based orchestration, and closed-loop automation.
Familiarity with security frameworks for telecom environments.
  • Be at the forefront of AI-driven network automation and next-generation telecom software.
  • Collaborate with world-class experts in an innovation-driven environment.
  • Influence industry standards and global technology direction.
