Current language level: Beginner
Motivation: I'm doing my masters in history right now at the University of Toronto and I'm focusing on southern African history. One of my requirements for this masters program is to develop language skills in a language relevant to my research (to be able to read historical documents, conduct oral history interviews, etc.). I don't need to be able to become fully proficient in the language, but I need to be able to show progress and a development of skills that will help me in my academic research. I have no knowledge of Afrikaans right now so I would be starting with the basics. Since this is funded by the department, I'll have to provide them with a syllabus that demonstrates the language skills that I will be learning (once we figure this out) and I'll have to do some type of examination of the tutor's choice to show the department.
