Position Summary





Based in the Northwest Territories, this role will serve as a key HR partner to field-based and remote employees, ensuring they receive the support, guidance, and resources needed to thrive.





Reporting to the Manager, People & Culture, the People & Culture Advisor will provide hands-on HR support in areas such as employee relations, recruitment, onboarding, training, and engagement initiatives. This role will also play a critical part in building strong relationships with local communities, Indigenous partners, and regional talent pools to support workforce development and retention in the North.





As a trusted People & Culture representative in the region, the successful candidate will be proactive, adaptable, and skilled in balancing both operational and strategic HR needs. They will act as a key point of contact for employees and managers in the North, ensuring HR policies, processes, and programs are effectively implemented while fostering a positive, inclusive, and high-performing workplace culture.




Duties and Responsibilities




Regional Employee Relations & Support Serve as the first point of contact for HR-related inquiries for field-based and Northern employees, escalating complex issues to the Manager or Director. Address employee concerns, provide guidance on workplace policies, and assist with performance discussions. Support employee accommodations, leaves, and workplace investigations as needed. Data entry and maintenance of the HRIS including on/offboarding Produces accurate reports through HRIS, manipulating data in excel as needed. Maintains the employee files and the HR shared files Draft and post employee announcements as required Assist with the administration of various HR programs. Including performance management, recognition and engagement Completes grant applications and other government documents as needed. Create & maintain reports that track key people related metrics Work with the Manager, People & Culture on regional training needs, especially around compliance, leadership, and Indigenous Awareness Training. Ensure compliance with territorial employment laws, labor regulations, and KBL policies. Work with the Director and Manager to identify unique challenges in the North and tailor policies accordingly. Assist with safety compliance and HR aspects of incident reporting in collaboration with HSE teams.



Recruitment & Onboarding




Assist in sourcing and recruiting for Northern-based roles, ensuring strong hiring pipelines in remote regions. Develop relationships with Indigenous communities, local schools, and training institutions to support regional recruitment efforts. Work closely with the Recruitment Coordinator to ensure local hiring aligns with company goals. Participate in job fairs, hiring events, and community engagement initiatives in the North.



Employee Engagement



Support and help implement engagement action plans for Northern teams based on survey results. Champion KBL's culture and core values by organizing regional HR initiatives, team-building activities, and recognition programs. Ensure consistent HR communications reach all Northern employees, adapting delivery for remote and field-based workers.



Physical Requirements





Long periods of sitting, computer work for extended periods. You are responsible for working safely and adequately utilizing Workplace Ergonomics to avoid injury to yourself and others.




Working Environment





There is a possibility of cuts, bruises, straining, disease and /or severe injury if safe work practices are not followed.



Travel is required up to 30% of time.


Work is primarily carried out indoors, at times, there may be a requirement to go outside. Therefore, there can be exposure to extreme weather in the winter months. There can be dust, noise, mud, water, smoke, and bacteria exposure.




Qualifications




4+ year of experience of HR experience, preferably in a fast-paced, field-based, or remote workforce environment. Post secondary education in Human Resource Management preferred. Strong understanding of territorial labor laws and workforce dynamics in the Northwest Territories Ability to build relationships with Indigenous communities, local organizations, and workforce development agencies. Comfortable working in a fast-paced, operational environment with field-based teams. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills Knowledge of the Waste Management & Environmental industry is an asset. Ability to act with discretion and treat confidential information appropriately. Excellent attention to detail, organization skills and ability to multi task. Excellent computer skills in MS Office.
