The Opportunity We are currently seeking a Finance Operations Advisor to join our Finance team in Sudbury, Ontario or Thompson, Manitoba. This is a fixed term position. You will support and influence decision making at the Mining & Milling, Processing or plant level to improve business value (i.e. Financial, production, value, impacts downstream), to find opportunities for the plant to improve business value generation, and to uphold financial controls in alignment with accounting principles.   • Finance Leadership:
  • Understand and coordinate the defining of operational/plant/North Atlantic, Mining & Milling and Processing Plants business value drivers (coordinating) and track business performance
  • Initiate teams to perform deviation and root cause analysis and implement action plans that are measurable and contribute to the overall business
  • Monitor, assess, communicate and assist production areas in using business information systems to access information (SAP) \xe2\x80\x93 (coordinating)
  • Coordinate work with plant teams to develop action plans that improve business value decisions that improve production, cost and capital performance (coordinating)
  • Identify and propose business value opportunities as well as optimization of operation business plans (coordinating)
  • Design and deliver business value competence within the business (coordinating)
  • Provide high quality analytical support to ensure the range of financial outcomes, value drivers and risks are fully evaluated and aligned to strategic intent of plant, operations and corporate levels (service giving)
  • Initiate the assembly of cross functional teams as assigned (e.g. lower pond slimes) - (service giving)
  • Work to develop appropriate control systems that act as early warning mechanisms to identify variances to targets to both course correct in the case of risk and to point out opportunities wherever possible. (service giving)
  • Identify risks and variances in performance in sufficient time to enable effective course corrections. (coordinating)
  • Collaborate with Central group in creating and revising financial policy. (advisory)
  • Demonstrate independent initiative to improve process knowledge. (Service giving)
  • Mentor peers to increase their analytical and business process competence. (advisory)
  • Assist in developing activity based budgets & forecasts in conjunction with plant contacts and through Mining & Milling, Processing and Central nodes, using production and cost drivers
  • Attend plant update meetings with plant management as requested by Business Analysts and /or Finance Manager and heads of Mining & Milling and Processing Plants meetings
  • Monitoring and Analyzing
  • Using data to measure and interpret key financial and non-financial performance measurements including business value drivers, trends, tracking and reporting progress of strategic objectives and recommended corrective actions to key partners (coordinating)
  • Continue to streamline and optimize business processes to improve the timeliness of reporting results. (coordinating)
  • Support and assess use of business information systems to access information (ex. SAP) (monitoring)
  • Identify and understand the cause-effect relationship between the critical metrics and define the root cause of the deviation
  • Planning
  • Communicating, challenging and coordinating the development of the annual strategic plan, budget and forecasts (production, operating, period and capital costs) at the Mining & Milling, Processing Plants or plant level\xe2\x80\x93 (coordinating)
  • Provide support to head of Mining & Milling, Processing and various plant management throughout NA for analysis of scenario plans and preparation of agile operating plans
  • Business Case Subject Matter Expert (SME)
  • Have a thorough understanding of business impacts (financial/value) and plant structure and awareness of interfaces external to the various operations (production, inventories, cost, capex, purchase feed) \xe2\x80\x93 (monitoring)
  • Application of appropriate tools for case evaluations (ex. mines Ore Evaluation Model, EBITDA, Margin) \xe2\x80\x93 (prescribing)
  • Be a member in the capital risk ranking process at the overall level to ensure all site capital proposals meet cost benefit and business value justifications, provide analysis and advice for all capex submissions. (coordinating)
  • Accounting and Financial Reporting
  • Ensure that costs charged are valid and consistent with generally accepted accounting principles and Vale policies and procedures (estimated SES process, application of capital vs. operating (Prescribing)
  • Assist in the closing of the NA metals accounting month-end process, which entails providing information and analysis on metals flow, inventory imbalances, product costs and unit costs (coordinating)
  • Ensure financial reporting requirements are delivered accurately and timely (Prescribing)
  • Prepare and analyze quarterly reconciliations of key balances (Coordinating)
  • Provide analytical insight and challenge information provided from a specific plant or across various areas within the NA structure(Auditing)
  • Contribute to generating reports which provide accurate & timely analysis (Coordinating)
  • Guide the accumulation and analysis of the monthly forecast using tools such as the production plan and cost driver calculation (service giving)
  • Organize and coordinate yearly fixed asset reviews to ensure accurate and up to date asset balances and life expectancy (coordinate)
  • Provide information to external and internal auditors to ensure integrity and compliance of financial documents (coordinate)
About You Education:
  • An Undergraduate Degree is required
  • Background in accounting, business/commerce, education in engineering, field is preferred
  • Knowledge and understanding of Accounting principles is preferred
  • Professional accounting designation (C.A., C.M.A. or C.G.A.) is preferred
  • Cross-functional team including professional accountants, MBA, or Engineering is preferred
Experience:
  • 5-7 years of experience in a similar subject area
  • Progressive experience in a resource, processing or manufacturing environment is preferred
