Our expectations

Reporting to the Manager, Health and Safety, the Advisor, Environmental Compliance is responsible to ensure that RONA inc. is meeting all legislative requirements relating to hazardous materials specifically associated with identification, storage, merchandising safety, waste disposal, in-store/facility spill response and mitigation, emergency spill management, and reporting to Federal and Provincial authorities as required by law.

This includes the ongoing development, implementation, and support of the RONA inc. hazardous materials and environmental compliance program for all locations in Canada. This is achieved through strong partnerships with various internal stakeholders such as Merchandising (item setup, hazmat identification, applicable SDS), Transportation (TDG regulations, and training), Distribution (storage), Quality Assurance (product recalls, and/or QA issues), Omnichannel (online/internet sales, courier shipping), Sustainability (stewardship/recycling programs), and Stores.

Further, the Advisor, Environmental Compliance is responsible to develop and maintain strong partnerships with external vendors that support various aspects of the hazardous waste and environmental compliance program. These aspects include hazardous waste pickup/disposal, emergency spill response/remediation, PPE, and other Hazmat Supplies (waste drums, labels, etc.)

Your role
Understand and ensure that RONA inc. is meeting regulatory obligations relating to hazardous waste identification, storage, merchandising safety, waste disposal, in-store/facility spill response and mitigation, emergency spill management
Develop, enhance, implement, and maintain hazmat/environmental programs and policies to ensure compliance with government regulations, and resolve related issues as they arise from stores, distribution centres, or other corporate locations
Support corporate locations to ensure that they are meeting legislative and company requirements, through regular communication, training (also ensuring required training is completed), location visits, and audits
Support corporate locations to research, develop, and execute action plans to address non-conformities, violations, and/or citations with regulatory officials, including formal responses to internal stakeholders as well as Federal, Provincial, and local agencies
Work directly with the Merchandising/GIP team to ensure that all new (and existing) products identified as hazmat are properly classified, which includes item level regulatory reviews of guidelines set forth by the following agencies: Environment Canada, Transportation of Dangerous Goods (UN Codes), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Occupational Health and Safety, as well as any individual Provincial, Federal, and Municipal regulations, or bylaws (Note: there are approximately 17,500 current items are classified as Hazmat)
Review, on a weekly basis, all new items that have been added (either in-store, or online) to ensure that an SDS is on record. Once confirmed, send a copy of all relevant information to Maerix (third party vendor) to validate the accuracy of the SDS provided by the vendor and ensure that it is uploaded to \xe2\x80\x9cParatox\xe2\x80\x9d, our online SDS catalogue
Monitor and manage daily the \xe2\x80\x9cHazmat\xe2\x80\x9d email inbox to effectively respond to any location inquires, validate/approve supply orders, respond to both emergency and non-emergency spill notifications (through 24/7 hazmat support hotline)
Respond to/support any hazardous material spills. This includes non-emergency spills where no environmental impact has been noted, and can be addressed safely with the equipment/spill kits onsite, as well as emergency spills with environmental impact, whether

on company property or not, that will require detailed mitigation efforts and reporting to legislative authorities (i.e., Environment Canada)
Support the Quality Assurance team when product recalls and/or investigations involve items classified as hazmat. This can include pick-up/disposal direction, storage options, and/or spill response and mitigation support
Ensure all corporate locations have regular hazardous waste pick-ups through our third-party vendor
Develop and maintain detailed metrics for the hazmat/environmental compliance program. This includes the number of pick-ups by location (waste generation), Spills (minor & major), Supplies, Training compliance, Audit Results, and any associated expenses/cost
Prepare monthly a detailed overview of program performance, associated cost, and any spill mitigation efforts/action plans
Resolve any vendor service issues (Waste, Spill Management, SDS, Consulting, etc.)
Support and collaborate with the Coordinator, Environmental Compliance
The qualifications we are looking for
Bachelor\'s degree and/or equivalent in environmental compliance, hazardous waste management, or other equivalent/relevant studies
3 to 5 years of experience in a position involving health and safety, environmental compliance, or hazardous waste
Proven communication skills, both oral and written
Confidence speaking in front of a group
Ability to demonstrate leadership, resourcefulness, and initiative
