The Continuing Care Division (CCB) is nested under the Department of Seniors and Long Term Care (DSLTC) and has been designated as a government mandated priority.

About Our Opportunity

Designated by the Minister of Seniors and Long Term Care, our Adult Protection Workers strive to ensure the safety of clients aged 16 and older who are allegedly abused or neglected as defined by the Adult Protection Act. You will achieve this through the investigation and assessment of clients referred, as well as by working closely with other departments, stakeholders, care coordinators, health professionals and other community agencies.

Primary Accountabilities

You will ensure the safety of your clients through the investigation and assessment of clients referred, as well as by working closely with other departments, stakeholders, care coordinators, health professionals and other community agencies. In addition, you will:

  • Investigate, assess and refer clients for services in accordance with the Adult Protection Act;
  • Create care plans to address client\'s protection needs which may include court intervention;
  • Complete Adult Protection Risk and Capacity Assessments to determine an adult\'s risk level and if the client has the mental and/or physical ability to protect themselves from the alleged abuse/neglect;
  • Provide case management related to the client\'s protective needs; monitor care plans to ensure the protective needs of the client are mitigated;
  • Maintain detailed case management records electronically; and
  • Initiate court applications in accordance with the Adult Protection Act, submit evidence to the courts through affidavits and testifying in court (as required).
Qualifications and Experience

This position requires you to have a Bachelor of Social Work in addition to four (4) years of related experience, or a Master of Social Work plus two (2) years of related experience. Must be registered (or eligible for registration) with the Nova Scotia College of Social Workers. Candidates registered with the Nova Scotia College of Social Workers as \xe2\x80\x9cSocial Worker Candidate\xe2\x80\x9d are not eligible.

As the successful candidate, you have assessment, communication, and interviewing skills as well as negotiation, problem solving, critical thinking, time management. You also have experience/knowledge in counselling techniques for crisis and life-threatening situations.

In addition, you have excellent computer skills for Microsoft Suite including Word and PowerPoint. You are also able to work independently and cooperatively with others as well as demonstrate an ability to make sound decisions.

Familiarity with the Adult Protection Act is an asset.

Previous experience working in Child Protection is considered an asset.

Working Conditions
  • Frequent travel using your own vehicle within the province will be required.
  • Majority of work is performed in the community and visiting in client\'s homes.
  • Sometimes scheduled to work outside of regularly scheduled hours.
This role does entail a high volume of work and at times will require flexible hours outside regular business hours. Due to the multiple spheres of action and scope of responsibilities that this position requires, there can be significant mental pressure, requiring your resilience. Your decisions have a significant impact on the safety and well-being of both clients and staff requiring your ability to balance conflicting views with multiple stakeholders.

Additional Information

This is a permanent position. The position will cover all counties in the Western region ( Luneburg, Queens, Digby, Yarmouth, Shelburne, Annapolis and Kings Counties)\xe2\x80\x9d. The successful candidate can identify either Kentville or Digby as their main office location.

Pay Grade: PR 16

Salary Range: $2,852.85 - $3,489.63 Bi-Weekly
