Job Description


The Faculty of Education is seeking a dynamic and multi-skilled individual to fill a two-year term position as the Facilitator of the UPEI Faculty of Education\'s Education Learning Commons (ELC). The ELC is a small, specialized collection of curriculum-based teaching resources used by instructors and students from the Faculty of Education for course work and lesson preparation.

The Faculty of Education at the University of Prince Edward Island is committed to developing caring, compassionate, and innovative teachers. We offer 12-month Bachelor of Education programs in English and French Education with specializations in Indigenous Education, International Education, and Adult Education. Our undergraduate programs have a strong focus on issues pertaining to diversity, equality and social justice in local and global communities. At the graduate level, the Faculty also offers a Masters of Education degree in both course-based and thesis-based streams, as well as a PhD program. A Certificate in Adult Education is offered in partnership with Holland College.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Reporting to the Dean, Program Coordinators, and the ELC liaison the successful candidate will be responsible for the daily operation of the Education Learning Commons and providing support related to the academic success of international students within the Faculty of Education.

This includes:

  • Maintaining and developing the Education Learning Commons
  • Helping students and faculty locate and use ELC resources
  • Maintaining the automated circulation and resource management system
  • Acquiring new resources in consultation with the faculty
  • Recruiting, training and supervising student assistants
  • Creating and conducting workshops on specific topics as needed
  • Maintaining regular contact and working one-on-one with the Faculty\'s international students to identify students\' needs and support them to understand assignment expectations, organize and/or edit assignments, revise and practice presentations, and develop skills that will improve academic performance.
  • Liaising with relevant departments on campus to coordinate student support provided by the Education Learning Commons with other available supports at the University
  • Managing time to balance the everyday management of the ELC with the need to provide individualized or group support to the Faculty of Education\'s international students.
  • Assisting faculty in support of the academic success of international students
  • Supporting the Graduate Studies Coordinator to monitor the academic success of international students and to offer a biannual orientation to the students in the Med (Global Perspectives) program.
  • Planning and coordinating social events that enable international students to enhance their English-speaking skills, cultural understanding and integration with the university community
  • Other duties as required
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master\'s degree or Graduate Diploma in a relevant discipline plus three years relevant work experience is required
  • Additional qualifications such as a Masters of Teacher Librarianship, a Bachelor of Education or Certification in Teaching English as an Additional Language would be an asset
  • Ability to serve the French BED would be considered an asset
  • A combination of relevant education and experience will also be considered
  • Familiarity with basic word processing and presentation software and able to use Excel
  • An understanding and awareness of curriculum and learning resources for teachers, including current and classic children\'s and adolescent literature, as well as online and print non-fiction sources
  • An ability to interact collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students
  • Experience working with and teaching international students or in a multicultural environment
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong organizational, time management, and writing skills
