Overview

Are you a lawyer with experience in administrative law, employment law, and/or human rights law? WorkSafeBC\xe2\x80\x99s Law and Policy division is seeking a lawyer with at least 3 years\xe2\x80\x99 call to conduct written hearings of prohibited action complaints filed under the Workers Compensation Act. You will review complaints filed by workers who consider that a prohibited action has been taken by an employer in retaliation for raising occupational health and safety concerns. You will evaluate evidence and submissions from parties and render a written decision on whether the complaint succeeds. You will also decide appropriate remedies for successful complaints.

At WorkSafeBC, we offer a hybrid work model that combines the convenience of working remotely with the dynamism of working in one of our offices, based on the operational needs of the position.

In this role, you\xe2\x80\x99ll work primarily from your B.C. home and occasionally in our Richmond office.

What you\'ll do

As a legal adjudicative officer you will:

  • Draft clear, well-reasoned written decisions on prohibited action complaints with varying degrees of complexity
  • Conduct a high volume of written hearings in a timely manner and in accordance with the principles of procedural fairness
  • Analyze submissions from parties and evaluate evidence
  • Provide legal advice to officers and management on matters concerning prohibited action complaints
  • Prepare and present training materials and tools to assist other WorkSafeBC staff who support our area

Your background and experience
  • A law degree (LLB), and a member in good standing with the Law Society of BC
  • A minimum of three years\xe2\x80\x99 experience as a lawyer practicing administrative law, employment law, and/or human rights law
  • Decision-making experience with an administrative tribunal is an asset
