Summary of responsibilities
Reporting to the Manager Addiction Services, the Addiction Counsellor works collaboratively with individuals identified as being at risk for or as experiencing addiction or substance use issues, and possibly concurrent mental health problems that affect their functioning in some areas such as at home, school/work, and/or in the community.
Requirements of the job
2 year College Diploma in Human Studies
Strong counselling skills in the area of addiction and and experience working with all age group.
Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with community partners
Ability to work independently
Strong written and oral communication skills
Good computer skills
Certified in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention - Advanced
Demonstrated regular, punctual attendance
Minimal 2 years experience in Addiction counselling and 1 year experience in Mental health
Minimal 2 years experience in group facilitation
Experience in establishing a therapeutic relationship with patients to improve health outcomes and wellbeing
Experience in utilizing variety of counselling and psychotherapeutic tools, both individually and in group format, including prescriptive programs, problem solving, emotional regulation, techniques for coping with anxiety and stress, social skill development, milieu therapy, fostering life skills, crisis intervention, and coping with acute situations
Demonstrated assessment and treatment planning skills
Ability to be organized and autonomous, and have good team-work capabilities
Understanding of the etiological factors that contribute to addictions and mental health
Certified in First Aid/CPR
Valid Driver's License
Functional proficiency in both official languages (oral and written in English; oral in French - and testing completed)
