The
Nigel Program
is a licensed residential program for adults with complex disabilities. The interdisciplinary team at the Nigel Program provides nursing care, personal care, occupational and physical therapy, social work, dietary services, housekeeping services, and recreational therapy to facilitate active living programs.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Activity Worker selects, plans, implements, and evaluates a variety of activities, which assist in meeting the clients/residents social, recreational, intellectual, and physical needs, and works with and supports other team members, students, and registered volunteers assigned to the program. Activity Workers assist with the serving of meals and nourishments and assist residents with eating, including supporting those who need full assistance to eat.
Participation in interdisciplinary case reviews and electronic charting also required.
Collaborates with Manager of Volunteer Services and Innovative Activation to train, recruit, and monitor volunteers to support resident, client and outreach programs.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Activity Worker Certificate OR
A combination of education and work experience OR
Graduation from a recognized Activation Certificate or Recreation & Leisure Program; OR,
3rd or 4th year university education in a relevant field; such as Recreation and Health; Kinesiology; Social Work; Child and Youth Studies; Mental Health; Education (preferred)
Possession of a valid BC Class 4 Driver's License; or willing to obtain a Class 4 Driver's License preferred
Serving it Right certificate
Food Safe certificate
Experience:
Related experience working with geriatric clients in a day / community program, or care home setting required
Related experience working with mental health / brain injury, or care home setting an asset
Related experience training, recruiting, and monitoring volunteers required
Knowledge of the therapeutic value of a particular activity
Work within an interdisciplinary team
Skills / Abilities:
Ability to manage workload and develop programs to meet the changing needs of clients and residents
Ability to stimulate residents' interests, assess results of the program and work effectively on an individual or small group basis
Ability to exercise tact and good judgment
Ability to work effectively and communicate both verbally and in writing with staff, volunteers, residents, family members and the general public
Able to maintain confidentiality related to the clients, residents and families
Capable of working efficiently, both independently and in collaboration with others
Willing to obtain: Serving it Right certificate; Valid Food Safe certificate
Knowledge of software applications, particularly word processing and e-mail
Knowledge of electronic charting
Successful applicants will be required to report their vaccination status
