Here\'s what you\'ll be doing....

You\'ll oversee the development and growth of the Press\'s publishing program in Health and Medicine. Responsible for signing and developing scholarly and trade books within the discipline.

*For this position, we currently have the option of working totally remotely or in a hybrid model. However, this position may initially require some in-office time mixed with work from home during the onboarding phase.

Key Responsibilities include:

Acquisitions

  • Through consultation and agreement with the Editorial Director, identify appropriate targets for signings
  • Solicit manuscripts in relevant subject areas for potential publication, seeking out diverse and underrepresented perspectives
  • Assess suitability of proposals and manuscripts for the Press
  • Maintain and expand network of authors and advisors and engage routinely with faculty to shape a sustainable publishing program in health and medicine
  • Consult with members of the Publishing Division and with external editors and editorial boards
  • Secure subventions as required for individual projects
  • Maintain high standards of scholarship
Manuscript Review and Approval Stage
  • Identify and recruit appropriate readers to evaluate manuscripts, ensuring quality scholarly readers
  • Evaluate reader reports and provide direction to authors on requirements for changes to manuscript based on peer review process
  • Prepare materials, including budgets, to support publication of projects for the internal Publishing Committee and the Manuscript Review Committee (editorial board)
  • Negotiate contracts
Manuscript Development
  • Provide clear direction and regular communication to authors on review process and expectations based on review results
  • Track manuscript delivery dates and ensure that manuscripts are prepared to UTP specifications
  • Prepare final manuscript (including images) for transmittal to Editorial, Design, and Production department
  • Achieve transmittal expectations, with a minimum number of titles put into copy editing each year
Marketability of Books
  • Initiate cover design development
  • Consult with marketing staff to ensure appropriate descriptive copy promotional activities for key titles
Press Representative
  • Represent the interests of the Press by initiating contact with new authors, discussing ideas, and inviting submissions of their actual or potential manuscripts to the Press
  • Build partnerships with key stakeholders to ensure a steady pipeline of projects designed for academic and trade audiences
  • Keep informed of relevant academic conferences and trends within the discipline
  • Maintain a high level of visibility in the academy through campus visits in Canada and the United States along with attendance at relevant academic conferences
Education, Qualifications, and Experience:
  • Bachelor\'s or advanced degree in a related field
  • At least 2 years in a book acquisitions role
Knowledge, Skills, and Attributes:

  • Highly organized and an effective negotiator and influencer
