About the Surrey Teachers' Association:



The STA is a union of professionals representing 6700+ public school teachers in Surrey, British Columbia, and has been in existence since 1941. All public-school teachers in Surrey belong to the BCTF (British Columbia Teachers' Federation) and their local teachers' association, the STA.

The personnel at the STA office include 10 full-time elected Table Officers, 1 elected Member at Large who is in the office on a part-time basis, 1 Operations Manager, and 8 staff who are members of Teachers' Federation Employees' Union.

About the opportunity:



The Surrey Teachers' Association (STA) is seeking a permanent full-time Accounting Clerk.

The Accounting Clerk is responsible for ensuring that all payments are made and received in a timely manner; the general ledger and accounting software is up-to-date, and that we are in compliance with all Revenue Canada and other government requirements. Supervision/oversight will be provided by the Operations Manager and the President of the STA.

The STA office follows the same calendar as the Surrey School District and is closed for 2 weeks for spring and winter break respectively. We are also closed for approximately 7 weeks in the summer.

Principal duties:



Accounts payables/receivables Prepare materials and assist the auditors with year-end audits Source deductions and WCB payments MPP payment deductions for staff Process and issue payments for Professional Development Application forms Staff payroll; time sheets and payroll reports, applicable new staff paperwork, tracking payroll, and leaves for unionized staff and Office Manager Assist members with general inquiries Receive, process and facilitate Sunshine Fund requests Provide coverage on phones as needed Handle facilities booking requests and associated insurance requirements

Required education and training experience:



Minimum 3 years of related clerical and bookkeeping experience with a degree in a complimentary area. Strong computer skills including Sage Accounting or other accounting software, excellent Excel and Microsoft Office (Outlook and Word) skills. Acute attention to detail with demonstrated ability to make very few errors and/or catch errors made. Highly organized with the ability to multi-task, prioritize and work independently. Excellent spoken and written English skills. A professional welcoming presence with demonstrated customer care skills. Demonstrated ability to process a large volume of accounts payable and receivable transactions. Results oriented with great time management skills. Excellent problem resolution skills. A strong work ethic with a high degree of professionalism, personal integrity and a can-do attitude. Highly motivated and flexible with the ability to contribute to a team. Proven ability to maintain an accounting system. Thrives in a high pressure, deadline-oriented environment. Ability to recognize and maintain confidentiality. Ability to be effective in a unionized environment.
