Responsibilities
Reporting to the Manager of Financial Services, this position is responsible for budgeting, quarterly financial reporting, capital plan submissions and day to day accounting for operations and capital projects. This position supervises employees, schedules work and coordinates with schools and other departments to provide advice, assimilate information, and complete internal and external reporting.
Plan and execute annual budget cycles and ad-hoc funding within time constraints provided by the Ministry of Education; prepare internal/external reports as directed by governing bodies and senior management.
Establish trust and collaborate with all department heads; provide them with guidance and advice regarding Ministry and Board expectations for funding agreements, accounting and budget matters; analyze results and prepare/present budget reports to assist internal users with varying financial acumen.
Supervise employees, foster teamwork and continuous improvement to complete daily accounting operations; review and approve entries, invoices, monthly remittances and cyclical tasks related to accounting operations.
Investigate and advise on complex accounting decisions in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and Public Service Accounting Board rules.
Participate in capital planning meetings and prepare business case submissions for Capital Priorities for internal approval; Liaise with the Ministry of Education Capital Branch for capital matters; review and approve capital accounting and prepare reporting for internal/external users.
Qualifications and Skills
The successful candidate shall possess the following qualifications, skills and abilities:
Bachelor of Business, Economics or similar 3 or 4 year degree, specialization in Accounting preferred.
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Designation.
Minimum 3-5 years in accounting operations with increasing responsibility.
3 years experience with Ontario School Boards in operational and capital accounting is preferred.
Experience managing cyclical schedules and presenting financial information.
Organization skills.
Collaboration and teamwork skills.
Presentation and written communication skills.
Leadership and interpersonal skills.
