Job Description


Reporting to the Director, Accessible Learning & Inclusion, the incumbent is responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive academic accommodation plans and supports for students with disabilities which are intended to facilitate and promote successful transitions and a learning environment that is conducive to academic success and inclusiveness. The incumbent determines appropriate individualized accommodations for students based on Sheridan\'s Academic Accommodation Policy and Procedure for Students with Disabilities and the Ontario Human Rights Commission\'s policies and guidelines for accommodating persons with disabilities. Through the utilization of a case management service delivery model, the incumbent ensures students receive appropriate accommodations by determining their eligibility for services and providing accommodation through the coordinating, facilitating and delivery of a range of services and supports.

What You\'ll be Doing

  • Conducting intake appointments and verifying documentation (medical, psychological, neurological, psychoeducational) to determine student eligibility for academic accommodations and support services;
  • Preparing appropriate accommodation plans to address students\' functional limitations while upholding bona fide essential academic requirements;
  • Working with students to explore options/discuss solutions while promoting self-empowerment and self-advocacy;
  • Liaising and negotiating on students\' behalf regarding academic accommodations and accessibility issues;
  • Coordinating and facilitating transition sessions, information sessions, and workshops for students, parents, guardians/case workers etc. on identifying and accessing services within the college community;
  • Consulting with faculty and staff and acting as a resource to the campus community;
  • Researching, developing and coordinating appropriate programs/services to accommodate students with disabilities;
  • Providing information to external agencies on Accessible Learning policies and procedures as requested and assigned;
  • Coordinating Sign Language Interpreters and Computerized Note Takers, as requested;
  • Performing other related duties as assigned.

You have the ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality, work with diverse populations, respond to needs in a sensitive and positive manner, and utilize excellent judgment, analytical and problem-solving skills

You demonstrate an ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team in a client-centred environment, and possess a commitment to the principles of empowerment, integration, and inclusion.

The successful candidate will also meet the following qualifications:
  • 4-year degree in Disability Studies, Education, Human Services, Social Work, Psychology, Sociology or related discipline.
  • 3 years of experience working in a setting providing intake and direct services to individuals with disabilities, preferably in the postsecondary education environment (equivalency will be considered).
  • Knowledge about a variety of legislation governing disability supports at the post-secondary level (Human Rights Commission\'s policies and guidelines, AODA, FIPPA, etc.) as well as appropriate post-secondary accommodations, assistive technology, and college programs and services.
  • Experience providing accommodations based on recommendations in medical, psychoeducational, neuropsychological, and other assessments is preferred.
