Preference will be given to qualified employees within the Full Time Support Staff bargaining unit, Appendix D (in the role for 6 consecutive months) and RPT employees who have passed probation at Mohawk College.

Reporting to the Manager, Equitable Learning, the Accessibility Support Officer (ASO) supports, implements, evaluates, and promotes services for students with disabilities. The incumbent works with students from confirmation of enrolment (and often before confirming enrolment through outreach and orientation activities) to graduation, coordinates access to accommodations, provides college and external resources and referral information, provides short-term accommodation plans, and advocates on the students' behalf. The incumbent liaises with academic areas and other community stakeholders to offer guidance related to students with disabilities. In consultation with the Accessibility Counsellor and Financial Assistance, the incumbent coordinates the process of application completion, assuming various roles/task in the distribution of bursary funds, and completion of agreement forms for the Bursary for Student with Disabilities.


Additionally, legal and ethical statutes are reviewed and interpreted to ensure that Mohawk College is compliant with the Ontario Human Rights Code, Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, FIPPA, PHIPA, and Academic Accommodation for Students with Accessibility Needs Policy.


What you'll be doing:




Accommodation Planning



Works with applicants and students with disabilities and helps facilitate their education through ongoing involvement in their recruitment to Mohawk College, transition to post-secondary education, college life, graduation, and transition to employment. Using disability documentation (e.g., Individualized Education Plan (IEP), Accommodation Documentation Form , OSAP Disability Verification Form) the incumbent develops basic accommodation plans, as appropriate, and arranges other supports/services based on documented recommendations and guidance from Accessibility Counsellors and/or Manager, Equitable Learning. Facilitates renewal of Accommodation Letters, as referred by Accessibility Counsellor or Accessible Learning Services (ALS) Front Desk. Meets with students to provide basic accommodation planning for Pre-Admission Tests, consulting with Accessibility Counsellors/Manager as appropriate. Meets with OYAP and Dual Credit students to develop basic accommodation plans, using the student's IEP as a guide. Works with Accessibility Counsellors to support students with complex needs requiring multiple contacts and regular one-on-one interaction in navigating the accommodation process and resources. Demonstrates a commitment to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) by identifying and supporting diverse student populations to ensure equitable, ongoing, and barrier-free access to ALS services. Active involvement in macro-level departmental projects to increase service quality, including revision of forms and procedures that better help students and staff understand how accommodations are implemented at multiple campuses. Case notes are kept for each student in compliance with regulations.

Program Support



Stays current on community services and organizations in order to facilitate referrals. Identifies and collaborates with community resources to build a robust network of community partners. Works with Accessibility Counsellors to support the students to complete the Bursary for Students with Disabilities (BSWD) and Disability Bursary Help fund applications and corresponding documents, processes to complete forms including Ministry application and time logs, internal Financial Assistance documents, quotes, time logs. Tracks the process of BSWD application status within the shared Financial Assistance and ALS database(s). Provides one-on-one support to students on how to access the Testing Centre, the Learning Support Centre, other college resources, reviews the Accommodation Letter, and explains how accommodations are to be used which includes review of any relevant accommodation guides. Reviews safety plans with students and works with students, ALS staff, Security, facilities, relevant community agencies, and the student's faculty to review the safety plan to minimize risk to the student and the college environment. Works with ALS staff to provide ongoing monitoring of safety plans. Coordinates ASL interpreters, computerized note takers, tutors on part-time contracts, and confirms accurate submission of time sheets, invoices, and hours worked. Coordinates the matching of Accessibility Facilitators with students. This involves recruitment, matching and ongoing scheduling for both the staff and student. Facilitates arrangement of ergonomic classroom furniture which includes determining what classrooms require furniture, contacting Property Services to have furniture delivered, and working with Property Services when modifications to workstations are needed. Inputs and tracks Disability Indicators (DI) of permanent disability in Banner system on a bi-weekly basis for all students with a permanent disability to ensure consideration for financial awards and compliance with Tuition Fee Policy. Ensures compliance with reduced course load accommodations by calculating appropriate course loads, coordinating information sharing across the college, and supporting student eligibility for academic recognition. Supports the coordination of registration processes for students approved for a reduced course load to ensure timely and equitable access to course enrollment. Creates part-time contracts for computerized note takers for students who are Deaf or hard of hearing. Creates part-time contracts for tutors and one-on-one support persons for apprenticeship students. Requests and monitors advanced schedules by coordinating with scheduling personnel to ensure early access to student's timetable and support planning. Assists with statistics portion of Ministry ASFD report, Interpreter Report, and SAWD report. Provides expenditure forecast i.e. computerized note takers, interpreters, tutors, and O&M Instructors.

Facilitation and Outreach



Transition programs and orientation sessions are implemented to prepare students for post-secondary education in advance of enrolment. Mohawk's disability-related services are promoted to students with disabilities to encourage knowledge of services and support prior to enrolment. Reference materials are provided in the form of brochures, community organizations handouts, postcards, etc. Electronic presentations are utilized and the online sites are updated for student access. Internal workshops are presented to faculty, staff, and student groups regarding access to ALS. Delivers presentations and workshops to a variety of external stakeholders, including school boards, off-site student groups, and community education programs, to promote awareness and access to services. Participate in open houses, high school events, college events with recruitment, and Day One information sessions at multiple campuses. Facilitate presentations across all Mohawk campuses as needed.

What you'll bring to the role:



4-year degree inEducation, Social Work, Psychology, Disability Studies, or Occupational Therapy. Minimum 3 years of experience providing direct services to individuals with disabilities and applied knowledge of carrying out recommendations in psycho-educational assessments, neuro-psychological assessments, medical reports, and other assessments. Knowledgeable about a variety of disabilities, legislations which determines disability supports at the post-secondary level (Human Rights Commission's "Guidelines on Accommodating Persons with a disability", Accessibility For Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), Freedom Of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) etc., appropriate post-secondary accommodations applicable to working with adults with disabilities, assistive technology, and familiarity with college programs and services. Facilitation, presentation, and outreach skills. Must have the ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality, work with a diverse population, respond to needs in a sensitive and positive manner, utilize excellent judgment, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Must have a commitment to the principles of empowerment, integration, and inclusion. Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a part of an interdisciplinary team in a student-centred environment. Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility. The ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse students, employees, and communities.
