The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, in partnership with Alberta Health Services, is inviting applications for the Division Director, Rheumatology in the Department of Medicine. Located in Edmonton, Alberta, the Faculty has been internationally recognized among the world's top 50 medical schools, and as one of Canada's premier health-education institutions. The University is currently home to more than 38,000 students and 15,000 faculty and staff. The University has an annual budget in excess of $1.4 billion and attracts more than $536 million in sponsored research revenue.

The Division of Rheumatology at the University of Alberta is focused on ensuring excellence in clinical practice, research and teaching. It currently provides clinical services to all acute care facilities in Edmonton Zone, and consultative service to Northern Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and the North West Territories. The University-based Division is ably assisted by a group of community based rheumatologists who actively support the research and education missions.

The Division's research activities have been nationally and internationally recognized and center on its clinical programs including RAPPORT (rheumatoid arthritis), FORCAST (ankylosing spondylitis) and the lupus program. Research also occurs in the area of medical education methodology.

The educational program in Rheumatology spans all levels of medical education from medical students through comprehensive fellowship programs with the Rheumatology Residents uniformly achieving high success rate in national (RCPSC) examinations.

The position of academic Division Director and AHS Edmonton Zone Section Chief is usually, but not necessarily combined. Reporting to the Chair, Department of Medicine, the Division Director will harness the existing strength of the Division in clinical care delivery, education and research in order to further the overall success and recognition of excellence for the Division. Working through the Zone Clinical Department Head, the successful candidate may also be appointed to the position of Section Chief, Rheumatology, Alberta Health Services.

The successful candidate for each role is expected to be a leader who will further develop the Division and the clinical Section to rival the best Rheumatology Groups worldwide. We value, above all, strong, effective leadership and outstanding collaborative skills. Individuals who can skillfully combine the clinical and academic missions will be given preference. The incumbent will build relationships with other subspecialty groups to advance areas of successful collaboration and will have the influence to bring about meaningful change where necessary in patient-care, research, education and administration. Leadership will be a key attribute, and the candidate must have outstanding people skills to build a vision for growth and development within GIM over the next 5-10 years.

The successful candidate must be a respected Rheumatologist holding an MD or equivalent, be eligible for licensure in Alberta, and be a Fellow in the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or equivalent. They will be recognized internationally through scholarly accomplishment in research and teaching. Preference will be given to individuals with administrative experience in an academic setting.

The successful candidate will be offered a contingent tenured appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor in the Department of Medicine, which is in accordance with the University of Alberta Faculty Agreement and offers a comprehensive benefits package.

Remuneration for this position is based on the Academic Medicine & Health services Program (AMHSP) with a very competitive remuneration package and comprehensive benefits. Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
