Description




The Department of Medicine and the Division of General Internal Medicine of The Ottawa Hospital and University of Ottawa are seeking to recruit Academic General Internal Medicine Specialists. The effective start date is July 2026, but the start date can be flexible depending on individual candidates. Please note that there is more than one position available.



The Division of General Internal Medicine comprises of 30 full-time and 25 part-time General Internal Medicine specialists with a range of expertise. The General Internal Medicine inpatient team staffs 6 traditional Clinical Teaching Units, 3 non-traditional teaching teams, and 4 consultation services. We have a dedicated Obstetrical Medicine service as well as a Point of Care Ultrasound Service. The division supports academic work with a part-time research assistant, work- in-progress research rounds, and administrative support. We offer robust ambulatory care opportunities in various clinics aligned with the interests of a diverse academic GIM service such as perioperative medicine, general medicine, liver disease, and vascular risk reduction, and obstetrical medicine. We are situated within the Department of Medicine which provides support for members with mentorship, research support, quality improvement methodology support, academic promotion support and a benefit plan for full time members.



The Ottawa Hospital is a 1150 bed tertiary-care hospital serving Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec at four inpatient sites (Civic, General, Heart Institute, and the Rehabilitation Centre) and one ambulatory centre (Riverside). There are approximately 50,000 inpatient admissions, 160,000 emergency visits and over one million outpatient visits annually.



Ground-breaking medical research is conducted through The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) and the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. We rank 5th in Canada for competitive, peer-reviewed grants from the prestigious Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Over 2,300 researchers are publishing more than 2,200 studies yearly, with hundreds being high-impact publications (top 10% or citations).



The Department of Medicine is a research-intensive Department. Members currently hold 25 University Research Chairs. The Department receives approximately $60 million per year in external research funding and members publish approximately 1200 peer-reviewed publications annually.



The Faculty of Medicine is a nationally recognized leader, ranked among Canada's top-tier medical faculties. As the most research-intensive Faculty at the University of Ottawa, the Faculty of Medicine contributes significantly to the University being ranked 5th in the country for total research revenues (Research InfoSource), routinely 2nd or 3rd in Canada for research intensity in Medicine/Science grants (McLean's), 4th in Canada for citations (2022 THE rankings) and 1st for overall growth in Tri-council funding over the past two decades. Responsibilities




Successful candidates will be expected to spend at a minimum 20% of their time on academic work and every division member will be committed to teaching within the Department of Medicine and University of Ottawa for at least 10% of their time. Clinical service for full-time faculty, ranges from 12 to 24 weeks per year, including both inpatient service and ambulatory clinic work. Candidates with the following academic and clinical skills are encouraged to apply:

Obstetrical medicine expertise Point of Care ultrasound expertise Ambulatory care including perioperative medicine, vascular risk reduction, liver disease, and general internal medicine ambulatory care Candidates wishing to devote 50% of their time to research relevant to General Internal medicine (these candidates will have advanced training in their scholarly area with a proven track record of scholarly dissemination

Qualifications




The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to advancing scholarship at The Ottawa Hospital and the University of Ottawa through contributions in research, quality improvement, education, or curriculum design. We seek individuals who are passionate about academic work and bring their own ideas, curiosity, and energy to the Division. Candidates with a proven record of scholarly dissemination and expertise or advanced training in research methods, medical education, quality improvement, or curriculum development are encouraged to apply. Excellent communication skills, effective collaboration within interdisciplinary teams, and proficiency in French are considered strong assets.



The successful candidate must hold an MD degree; be a member of, or be eligible to be a member of, the Canadian Medical Protective Association; have, or be eligible for FRCPC (or equivalent specialist designation) with a certification in General Internal Medicine by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada; and, have, or be eligible for, licensure in Ontario. The successful candidate will be eligible to hold an academic appointment at the rank of an Assistant Professor or higher at the University of Ottawa. Academic rank will be commensurate with the candidate's qualifications and experience. The successful candidate will be committed to patient care, clinical teaching, and supervision both in the General Internal Medicine in patient service and at least one of our ambulatory care services including General Internal Medicine Rapid Referral and General Medicine Clinics, Obstetrical Medicine, Point of Care Ultrasound, Perioperative Medicine Clinic, Vascular Risk Reduction, and General Medicine-Liver clinic.



The University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital are bilingual institutions and therefore in the case of potentially successful candidates of equal ability, a bilingual (French/English) candidate would be preferred.

The income for this position is derived from a variety of sources including but not limited to clinical billings (fee-for-service), salary support (AFP) as well as honorariums/stipends.
