Your opportunity:

University of Toronto Mississauga\'s Forensic Science Program is designed to provide students with an understanding of scientific analyses, theories, laboratory skills, and field techniques as these are applied in forensic settings. Programs are offered in the fields of Forensic Anthropology, Forensic Biology, Forensic Chemistry, and Forensic Psychology. Reporting to the Department Manager, the Academic Counsellor provides academic advising services to undergraduate students, assisting them in making decisions affecting their academic progress at U of T Mississauga from enrolment through to graduation. This position assists students with a wide range of academic issues and concerns, including interpretation of University requirements, policies and procedures, selection of courses and programs and meeting degree requirements. The work of the Academic Counsellor is accomplished through individual in-person, virtual and electronic interactions, as well as group advising sessions, workshops, webinars and in-person student-focused events, such as Fall/Spring Campus Day, Subject POSt Fair, and Experiential Learning Fair, among other events.

The Academic Counsellor also provides academic support to the Forensic Science Program by assisting with preparing curriculum change documentation and attending Undergraduate Curriculum Review Sessions, course timetabling, attending academic integrity meetings and preparing academic offense documentation for submission to the Academic Integrity Unit.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Advising students on academic and/or financial matters by providing options and consequences incorporating personal circumstances impacting academic success and an understanding of an individual\'s background
  • Advising on the appropriateness, precedents and process for petitions and appeals, and suggesting alternative course of action as necessary
  • Providing detailed information on program and/or course eligibility requirements, procedures, policies and deadlines
  • Coordinating the schedule for academic calendars
  • Maintaining course information on student information systems
  • Handling sensitive and/or confidential information
  • Making informed referrals and supporting an individual in distress until referral contact is made
Essential Qualifications:
  • Bachelor\'s Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum four (4) years related experience advising students on program/course requirements and academic progression.
  • Proficiency in the use of MS Office, ACORN/ROSI and Degree Explorer and ability to learn new applications
  • Experience conducting presentations and/or workshops
  • Experience in the administration of University policies and procedures with emphasis on undergraduate program academic guidelines, procedures and policies.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including presenting and public speaking
  • Strong commitment to diversity and the ability to function with sensitivity and respect in a multicultural/international environment
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and to employ tact, discretion and good judgement
  • Demonstrated organization and time-management skills with the ability to effectively prioritize, multi-task and organize work, and meet tight deadlines while able to pay attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated skills and ability to provide effective guidance and advice to students in a responsive, empathetic, thoughtful, and discreet manner.
