Your opportunity:

The Academic Advisor, Upper Year & Transition Out, isa critical member of the team in the Registrar\'s Office and takes the lead in developing and delivering group sessions around support for students who are in the final years of their studies. The Academic Advisor promotes a welcoming environment in the College for students from diverse backgrounds and serves as the primary support for upper year students.

This role is currently eligible for a hybrid work arrangement, pursuant to University policies and guidelines, including but not limited to the .

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Advising students on the development of their educational plans
  • Advising students on academic and/or financial matters by providing options and consequences incorporating personal circumstances impacting academic success and an understanding of an individual\'s background.
  • Advising students on program and/or course requirements by probing and providing a range of options and possible consequences.
  • Reviewing and assessing student records to confirm eligibility to graduate
  • Advising on the appropriateness, precedents and process for petitions and appeals, and suggesting alternative course of action as necessary.
  • Facilitating educational workshops and seminars; developing content for instructional workshops.
  • Resolving issues within the scope of the role and escalating problems as required.
  • Providing proactive support to individuals in distress and making referrals to specific university services.
Essential Qualifications:
  • Bachelor\'s degree in a relevant discipline, or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum four (4) years\' of recent and related student academic advising experience in a university setting, preferably in a registrar\'s office.
  • Experience interpreting, applying and advising on rules, guidelines, and procedures of the Faculty of Arts and Science or with undergraduate students.
  • Experience working with undergraduate students.
  • Experience and sound knowledge of best practices in advising and student services.
  • Advanced skills with Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Advanced skills with ROSI/ACORN, Degree Explorer, or other similar enterprise database solutions/CRM systems.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated time-management skills with the ability to effectively prioritize, multi-task and organize work, and meet tight deadlines while able to pay attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated skills and ability to provide effective guidance and advice to students in a responsive, empathetic, thoughtful, and discreet manner.
  • Knowledge and understanding of equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Assets (Nonessential):
  • Experience working with and advising international students and students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience with developing and facilitating workshops and seminars.
  • Knowledge of New College.
