Job Description


The Power Engineer will primarily act as the water treatment operator who is responsible for the safe, efficient, and reliable operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment, silt removal, starch recovery, and all auxiliary and ancillary equipment. In addition, this position will support the 3rd class powerhouse engineer in operation and maintenance of the boiler, refrigeration, utilities, and all their auxiliary and ancillary equipment.

Relationships and Contacts:

This person reports directly to the Chief Power Engineer. This person interacts with all employees in the facility.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Operation and maintenance of industrial wastewater treatment equipment
  • Operation of silt removal and starch recovery systems
  • Perform water tests on infeed and effluent water to ensure efficient treatment
  • Maintain chemical inventory, including ensuring proper dosing rates during process changes
  • Safe handling of treatment chemicals including acidic and caustic solutions
  • Coordination of waste removal by contractors
  • The worker will actively monitor the DCS computer screens and adjust as required for optimal performance and efficiency.
  • Preventative maintenance routines as scheduled including submitting corrective work and project requests
  • Maintain logs of equipment operation, testing results, inventories, and deficiencies
  • Adherence to sustaining ABSA Power Engineers Act, Boilers and Pressure Vessels Act and all associated boiler and refrigeration regulations.
  • Adherence to Lock Out and Tag Out policies, plant PPE requirements, and safe work procedures and precautions.
  • Operator will be required to maintain all work areas to high housekeeping and cleaning standards.
Health and Safety Responsibilities:
  • Using or wearing the protective equipment designated by the accident prevention policy.
  • Demonstrate strong Health, Safety and Environment behaviors
  • Demonstrate HSE leadership through safety programs, safe operation, participating in hazard identification, lead by example supporting and improving Irving\xe2\x80\x99s safety culture
  • Maintain a comprehensive knowledge of all critical safety systems and shutdowns
  • Support license to operate - meeting Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Alberta environmental requirements
  • Follow safe work procedures and report any workplace or job hazards.
  • Report any unsafe conditions or acts to your supervisor immediately.
  • Report all accidents or injuries to your supervisor immediately.
Food Safety Responsibilities
  • Follow good manufacturing practices and HACCP rules.
  • Participate in food safety and quality programs of the facility within the specific role
  • Reporting of food safety, food security, quality, and pest control concerns to the immediate supervisor
  • Participate in sanitation activities
Qualifications and Abilities:
  • Valid minimum 4th Class Power Engineering Certification
  • Grade 12 education
  • Able to work 12-hour shifts including nights and weekends
  • Able to work with minimal supervision and alone for extended periods
  • Willingness to learn
  • Work in a safe and efficient manner
  • Follow personal hygiene rules
  • Have up to date tickets for associated duties of the position
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to walk for 12 hours
  • Ability to squat, bend, kneel, reach, twist, use ladders, climb stairs
  • Occasional lifting up to 50lb/ 23kg
  • Occasional pushing up to 50lbs/23kg
  • Occasional carrying up to 34lbs/15kg
  • Ability to work at heights of up to 130ft
