POSITION OVERVIEW



Join the City of Maple Ridge as a Senior Building Official and lead a dedicated team of Building Officials in ensuring our city's structures meet the highest standards of safety and compliance. This role involves complex supervisory, inspectional, and regulatory responsibilities, focusing on reviewing plans and inspecting buildings to ensure adherence to the BC Building Code and related city bylaws.

As a Senior Building Official, you will specialize in building regulatory functions and possess deep expertise in the applicable sections of the BC Building Code. Your duties will include conducting field inspections, often accompanying and guiding subordinate Building Officials on challenging and intricate inspections. In addition, you will play a pivotal role in developing policies and procedures, recommending regulatory changes, and exercising considerable independence in interpreting and enforcing bylaws.

This position requires a strong decision-maker with the ability to manage day-to-day supervision effectively while maintaining high standards of compliance. You will work closely with senior management to address difficult policy questions, ensuring that department policies are adhered to and objectives are met. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE



Completion of a diploma in Building Technology from a recognized post-secondary institution plus considerable related experience, preferably as a Building Official; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES



Thorough knowledge of principles and practices related to the trades inspectional field of responsibility.

Thorough knowledge of the relevant municipal bylaws and provincial regulations, codes and standards.

Considerable knowledge of the departmental policies, procedures and practices related to the work.

Ability to understand, interpret and apply the BC Building Code, bylaws, regulations, plans and specifications, to recognize technical requirements and to suggest changes and corrections as required.

Ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinate staff.

Ability to read, understand and interpret plans and specifications; recognize technical requirements and suggest and enforce changes or corrections as required.

Ability to recognize faulty construction or hazardous conditions pertaining to structural stability of buildings.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts and to enforce regulations and codes with fairness, impartiality and good judgement.

Ability to assist in developing policies and procedures and to prepare a variety of reports related to the work.


LICENCES AND CERTIFICATES



BOABC Level 3 Qualification

Registration as a Building Official with the BOABC

Valid Class 5 driver's license valid in the Province of British Columbia.


HOURS OF WORK


This is an auxiliary position with no ongoing schedule of hours.
