Overall Purpose

The Centre of Excellence for Black Student Achievement was established with a mandate to support ongoing improvement in Black student experience and achievement within the TDSB. The Centre is conceptualized as an institutional department with the mandate to partner with communities, schools, and scholars designing, implementing, analyzing and disseminating school based pedagogic approaches towards improving student outcomes and Black students' feelings of school belonging.
Reporting to a Centrally Assigned Principal in a Learning Centre and working closely with the Superintendent, Equity, Anti-Racism and Anti-Oppression, the Student Equity Program Advisor will be responsible for coordinating and organizing workshops, student forums and group activities for all students within an emphasis on our most marginalized and underserved students spanning FDK - Gr 12.
The position will focus on issues which address identity, biases, barriers, marginalization, and build leadership and problem-solving skills, while motivating and re-engaging students in their own learning. This responsibility will support the system's goal of centering student voice and increasing student achievement and well-being. It will focus on sustainably designed, context specific, school-based supports and assist the system to address biases and barriers in order to close traditional and current achievement and opportunity gaps. It will also complement and support the Board's Equity Policy.
Summary of Duties
---------------------
Develop, organize and co-ordinate leadership training activities for students;
Work with school and central staff to establish support groups/networks for students;
Develop and support community partnerships at the Centre of Excellence for Black Student Achievement which provide support programs for marginalized youth (e.g. mentorships);
Develop resource teams of secondary students who are trained as facilitators to assist students with planning equity activities in schools;
Assist in the organization and delivery of student conferences and special student forums for diverse student groups;
Work in collaboration with various departments as required to support Black students and/or schools in crisis;
Maintain effective working relationships with internal and external resources;
Assist and support the organization to address issues arising through engaging student voice; and
Other duties as assigned by the Centrally Assigned Principal, System Superintendent and/or Associate Director.
Qualifications
------------------
University degree in a related field with a minimum of two years community work experience with group building, group development, training and facilitating skills or equivalent combination of education and experience;
Experience in working with children/adolescents from diverse Black communities
Excellent oral and written communication skills;
Ability to work co-operatively as part of an interdisciplinary team including teachers, principals, support staff and community agency personnel; and
Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office, student information systems etc.
Demonstrated ability to plan and develop programs for youth in the area of equity;
Proven ability to work effectively with students, teachers, administrators and community members;
Demonstrated knowledge of youth culture, traditionally marginalized youth groups, the dynamics of equity issues and the integral role education plays in dealing with equity issues;
An understanding of identity and specifically Black identity and its impact on achievement and well-being;
Ability to plan, implement and evaluate projects;
Demonstrated commitment to an environment which promotes equitable practices and values diversity; and
A working knowledge of TDSB Equity, Inclusive Design in TDSB, Caring and Safe Schools, Human Rights and other related policies and procedures.

Program Specific Provisions & Responsibilities:
This assignment will provide support to students who self-identify as Black;
Build positive and trusting relationships with Black students through a strength-based approach;
Provide support to develop and implement initiatives tied to Black Student Success and Excellence and mandates of the Centre of Excellence for Black Student Achievement;
Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team within the Centre of Excellence for Black Student Achievement team
Demonstrated understanding of the diversity and composition of Black communities and awareness of local community resources;

Travel:
These positions require travel to various schools and use of car is required for which employees shall receive a monthly travel allowance in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
Provision of own vehicle for Board Business; requires a valid Ontario driver's license.
Requires regular travel across TDSB sites
Ability to work evenings and occasional weekends in order to meet program needs.
