Job Description

The Faculty of Arts is seeking qualified Contract Academic Staff (CAS) to teach the following courses taught in the Department of Sociology, for the Winter Session in Term 2, at the Brandon University Campus. The courses may be delivered in an online synchronous format but preference will be given to qualified candidates who will teach in-person.


Qualifications

: Applicants must have successful teaching experience and relevant expertise in Sociology or related field. They will hold a Master's Degree in Sociology, and those holding a Ph.D. or who are at the ABD stage may be preferred. Applicants may seek to establish an experiential/traditional equivalency to Masters and are invited to contact the Chair of the Selection Committee on how to establish equivalent academic or professional credentials.


Salary

: $7,857 per 3 credit hour course.

: Classes run during Winter Term from January 6 to April 10, 2026 with an exam period following.


90:155 SOCIAL INSTITUTIONS AND SOCIAL PROCESSES - Monday, Wed. and Friday 11:40am - 12:30pm



An introduction to the sociological analysis of the structure and dynamics of social institutions such as the family, religion, education, polity, economic system, health, population, and collective behaviour. Each of these themes will be examined with reference to Canadian society in an increasingly global context.


90:256 RESTORATIVE JUSTICE - Monday, Wed. and Friday 2:40-3:30pm



Restorative Justice introduces a new way of looking at criminal justice in Canada. The philosophy is based on a balanced focus between the victim, offender and community. The existing systems will be evaluated in light of this new development. In this course the fundamental principles and practices of restorative justice will be examined. Victim offender mediation, sentencing circles, Elder panels, community justice committees and other restorative programs will be studies. Cross-registered with (Justice Studies) 56:256.


90:359 CRIME, LAW, AND MEDIA - Monday, Wed. and Friday 1:40-2:30pm



Media organizations produce cultural understandings of crime and the law. Much of what people know and believe to be true about the crime and the law might be said to come from media products like news reports or entertainment. This course examines crime and legal representations with a focus on the dominant role of media. Much of the research on media has addressed the effects of media on individuals. This course will focus instead on media as a powerful and dominant institution that influences cultural understandings of crime and law. Cross-registered with (Justice Studies) 56:359.
