The Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) Industrial Hygiene Laboratory, located at Chalk River Laboratories (CRL) site, conducts analytical laboratory testing to support hazard evaluation (physical, chemical or biological) and for the monitoring of employee health exposures. The Industrial Hygiene Lab performs field level assessment using direct reading instrumentation and analytical laboratory testing of chemical and physical hazards.
As part of the Corporate Industrial Hygiene Services group, the Industrial Hygiene Lab ensure compliance to CNL\xe2\x80\x99s Occupational Health and Safety programs.

This is a very exciting opportunity for a student interested in the Industrial Hygiene field and we look forward to working with the student hired as they grow their skills in our lab.

All students applying for student positions at CNL must be returning to full-time studies upon completion of their work term. Exceptions will be made for students who require a work term in order to graduate.

What you will be doing!:

  • Data entry of survey data and permits within the Industrial Hygiene database management.
  • Heat stress measurements \xe2\x80\x93 continuous monitoring of outdoor heat stress monitor.
  • Assisting with collection of noise dosimetry and area sound level mapping data to support CNL\xe2\x80\x99s Noise Management program.
  • Assisting with sample collection and direct reading the support CNL\xe2\x80\x99s breathing air quality monitoring program.
  • Operating IH monitoring equipment such as sound level meter, noise dosimeters, various single gas direct reading monitors and sampling pumps.
  • Setting up air sampling for various airborne contaminants using high and low flow sampling pumps and various types of sampling media.
  • Assisting with sample collection and direct reading for breathing air header analysis.
  • Assisting Senior IH Technologist with annual Fume Hood Capture Efficiency Verification.
  • General housekeeping and assisting with lists of laboratory consumables.
  • Receiving samples as per laboratory chain of custody procedures.
  • Sample preparation for laboratory analytical analysis.
  • Assisting with various instrument calibrations.
What we are looking for:
  • Security clearance eligibility required: Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United States and/or the United Kingdom.
  • Excellent computer skills and knowledge of MS Access, Word and Excel.
  • Adhere to lab procedures and instructions provided.
  • Basic analytical laboratory knowledge.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to accept direction from senior IH Technical staff.
  • College or university level in industrial hygiene, occupational health and safety, chemistry or biological health sciences.
