Position Overview
Reporting to the Coordinator of Programs -DHH (Atlantic Provinces), the Deaf Mentor provides information while modeling and supporting the development of visual communication, American Sign Language (ASL), and Deaf Culture with children and youth, families and educational teams.
As a Deaf adult, the Deaf Mentor has the shared knowledge, identity, and experience to be able to support children and youth as it relates to ASL development and understanding Deaf culture. The Deaf Mentor supports the understanding of Deaf cultural values and acts as a cultural role model and facilitator to the local Deaf community for the child and family through both virtual and in-person sessions.

Qualifications and Experience You Bring:
- Lived experience/first voice perspective as a Deaf person
- Native Fluency in ASL
- Minimum of three (3) years? experience working with children, youth and families
- Grade 12 or recognized equivalency
- Certificate or Diploma in Human Services, Youth Worker Program, Early Childhood Education or Undergraduate Degree in Social Sciences, Social Work or Education would be considered an asset.
- Effective understanding and use of written English
- Comfortable working in a virtual learning environment
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and relate positively to children, families, early learning staff, APSEA staff, administrators, educational team members and community partners
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Excellent organizational/time management skills
- Demonstrated self-initiative and ability to work with limited supervision
- Demonstrated confidentiality and professionalism with regard to access and distribution of student information.
- Culturally responsive with the ability to apply knowledge, experience and commitment in the areas of cross-cultural understanding, human rights and diversity
- Strong commitment to professional growth and learning to remain current in the field.
- Frequent travel in between Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, occasional travel is expected to Prince Edward Island (PEI) and Newfoundland (NL).
- Access to a reliable mode of transportation required; may require overnight stays
- ASL Instructor experience is an asset
- ASL/English Literacy experience is an asset
- Early Childhood Education is asset
- Community support/advocacy work is an asset
- Experience in the roles of summer camp counselling, residence counselling, paid or volunteer experience, is an asset
