Duration: 8 months (beginning in September)

Discipline: Masters level program with an emphasis on Microbiology and Geoscience research background

Year of study: Open to students who are currently in a masters level program

Location: Chalk River, ON

NOTE:
All students applying for student positions at CNL must be returning to full-time studies upon completion of their work term. Exceptions will be made for students who require a work term in order to graduate.

Microbiology/Geoscience Student

Hydrogen Technologies Branch, at CNL performs research and technology development in different areas of the hydrogen sector. One area is on the geologic storage of hydrogen in underground salt caverns. For this research, we are investigating the potential for micro-organisms that could consume hydrogen if they find access to the storage cavern beneath the ground.

What you will be doing!

  • Review of existing work at CNL relating to microbial consumption of hydrogen
  • Develop experimental test plan with senior scientist, to assess microbial colonies in geologic samples accessed by CNL staff from various sites across Canada
  • Catalogue microbes from various field samples (water, salts dissolved in water, other materials)
  • Assess conditions that could increase or decrease the growth of microbial colonies
  • Help build a gene database of potential microbes
  • Capture findings in a report
What we are looking for:
  • Laboratory experience is essential, as is experience conducting scientific experiments.
  • Excellent research and presentation skills, knowledge of statistics, and experience with related gene cataloguing software will also be considered when reviewing applications.

  • Currently enrolled in a Master\xe2\x80\x99s level program with an emphasis on Microbiology and Geoscience research background. Should have a Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree in Microbiology.
