JOB

SUMMARY:

The

Registered Nurse

reports to and works under the direction and supervision of the Manager of Iroquois Lodge. The purpose of the Registered Nurse - Charge Nurse is to provide safe, competent and quality nursing care to residents and to supervise the care given by RPNs and PSWs. The Registered Nurse - Charge Nurse will demonstrate competence at their current level of nursing practice and will seek out assistance from Manager to address areas of practice that he/she is unfamiliar with.



The Registered Nurse - Charge Nurse will collaborate with other members of the health care team and will be required to plan, direct and coordinate all activities necessary for the management of the unit. He/she will work closely with the Attending Physician. The Registered Nurse - Charge Nurse will collaborate with the Activity, Dietary, and other personnel in order to provide quality care to residents. The Registered Nurse - Charge Nurse will advocate for improvements in policies and procedures related to residents.

POSITION TITLE:

Registered Nurse - Charge Nurse



REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:




Reports to and works under the direction and supervision of the Manager of Iroquois Lodge.


PURPOSE & SCOPE OF THE POSITION:




The purpose of the Registered Nurse - Charge Nurse is to provide safe, competent and quality nursing care to residents and to supervise the care given by RPNs and PSWs. The Registered Nurse - Charge Nurse will demonstrate competence at their current level of nursing practice and will seek out assistance from Manager to address areas of practice that he/she is unfamiliar with.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:




Technical Functions:



+ Provides nursing care in accordance with administrative policies, physician orders, and established College of Nurses of Ontario standards of practice. Responsible for planning, initiating, directing and evaluating care given to residents. + Provides support and supervision to the RPNs and PSWs.
+ Responsible for assessing residents' conditions by recognizing and interpreting signs and symptoms, and where appropriate will initiate remedial health measures.
+ Responsible for the nursing care of acutely ill residents.
+ Will assist the Physician in diagnostic and therapeutic measures.
+ Responsible for the administration of medications and treatments as prescribed.
+ Responsible for maintaining accurate and complete records of nursing observations and procedures performed and entered into Point Click Care (PCC).
+ Will be responsible for reporting, implementing and following up with Zero tolerance of abuse policy and report situations of abuse to Manager and Ministry of Health.
+ Responsible for proper care of equipment used in provision of care to residents.

Assists with rehabilitation of residents in accordance with care plan.


Assists in maintaining the physical and psychosocial environment of the resident. Identifies and understands the needs of residents and families. Assists in teaching residents good health habits. Responsible for ordering and receiving medication from pharmacy. Assists with orientation and in-service education of nursing personnel and assists with nursing research where appropriate. Supports and promotes the orientation and in- service education of unit staff. Monitors and evaluates performance of unit staff and compliance with facility policies and procedures. Reports and unsatisfactory work performance to the Manager. Responsible for first stage (verbal warning) of disciplinary action and documents the same to the Manager. Establishes and maintains good working relationships with all personnel, residents, and family members Co-ordinates the unit nursing services with other services in the facility. Ensures representation of unit staff on committees. Attends staff meetings, staff education and all committee meetings as designated. Participates in fire drills and fire extinguisher demonstration. Works with MDS RAI Coordinator to ensure assessments are completed according to Assessment Planner. Works with RPN to ensure all MDS RAI assessments are completed in a timely manner. Ensures that all infection precautions are in place and ensures that all staff adheres to guidelines.

Communications Functions:



+ Effective liaison with supervisors, staff, community members, general public and Chief and Elected Council in person or through telecommunications. + Effective communication with external bodies such as other First Nations, Federal, Provincial and Municipal governments/agencies and other organizations in person or through telecommunications.
+ Represents Six Nations Elected Council and community in a positive, courteous, cooperative and professional manner.

Administrative Functions

:


+ Completion and submission of: time sheets leave forms, travel forms, performance appraisals and work plans in accordance with Six Nations Elected Council policies and procedures. + Process mail and/or electronic mail in timely fashion.
+ Perform work functions in accordance with Six Nations Elected Council policies and procedures and the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care legislation and regulations.
+ Attend meetings as required: staff meetings, committee meetings, Elected Council meetings and or political portfolio meetings.
+ Attend training/workshops as required.

Accountable for his/her actions and practice according to the Standards of Practice for Registered Nurses as per College of Nurse of Ontario.


Ensures that incident reports are complete. Develops and maintains up to date care plans and quarterly reviews in PCC. Organizes and contacts appropriate staff for any resident care conference as required. Deals tactfully and courteously with staff, residents, families and visitors. Keeps them informed regarding resident's general condition, problems and needs. Assumes responsibility for personal and vocational growth and development. Participates in in-service education programs. Responsible for ensuring that a full complement of nursing staff is present on each shift. The Registered Nurse - Charge Nurse will replace staff that call in sick and will check the line of seniority before calling in said staff member. The Registered Nurse - Charge Nurse must confirm with the Manager for any overtime granted to any staff member, or any calls to agency staff. During the times when the Manager is not in the building, the Registered Nurse - Charge Nurse is responsible for the welfare and safety of the residents. If the Registered Nurse - Charge Nurse has any cause for alarm, or circumstances arise which jeopardize the safety of the residents, he/she is to notify the Manager of Iroquois Lodge.

Other Functions

:


+ Perform other related duties as assigned by Manager of Iroquois Lodge ? Perform projects as assigned. + Participate in community pandemic and outbreak events as needed.
+ The health and safety of our residents, staff and visitors is important to us. All staff will follow best practices in infection control (as outlined in our Infection Control policies and procedures) and health and safety (as outlined in the Occupational Health and Safety Act and in Six Nations' policies and procedures).
+ Provides support to the Six Nations Emergency Measures Plan by ensuring awareness of the Emergency Measures Plan and assistance as instructed by the Director of Health Services.
+ It is the responsibility of the employee to be aware of and adhere to all policies and procedures, including those that relate to client safety, staff safety and risk management.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:




Minimum Requirements:


Current Registered Nurse registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario and Registration with the RNAO Will have current First Aid & CPR

Other Related Skills:


Will have influenza vaccination yearly and have all other immunizations up to date with verification from public health or family physician Willing to work a rotating schedule of shifts and weekends. Must provide a clear police clearance review before employment and as requested throughout employment
