As a member of the team reporting to the Provincial Manager of Child Protection, the

Child Protection Supervisor

operates with a high degree of independence and provides operational management and leadership to the

Intake Assessment Team

. With Authority under Child, Youth, and Family Services Act, the Supervisor is responsible for operational oversight of Child Protection Social Workers (CPSW) and other staff in their provision of a variety of services to children in need of protection and their families.


Duties will include but are not limited to:




Ensure a work plan is in place for the team and lead it implementation; Appropriately and fairly allocate work to team members considering strengths and making best use of human resources and roles of different team members; Demonstrate and promote a positive workplace environment; Demonstrate accountability for the provision of high quality, front-line child protection services reflective of best practices and divisional and departmental priorities; Manage court reports and file disclosure process; Coordinate Critical Incident Debriefing following significant events and provide ongoing follow up including supporting a healthy morale and safe workplace; Provide regular individual and peer clinical supervision to ensure service is consistent with child protection legislation, departmental philosophy, best practice, standards and policies; assist with child-centred case work decisions and case planning; support employee professional development; Incorporate in clinical supervision the components of accountability, learning and support to staff which are providing front line service to traumatized and vulnerable children and families; Recommend staff for delegation by the Director of Child Protection following preparation and assessment, pursuant to child protection legislation, through supervision, training and modelling Oversee the receipt and assessment of child protection reports; provide ongoing assistance and case direction to ensure legislative and policy compliance; Interprovincial Coordinator: managing all interprovincial requests, alerts and agreements coming in or out of Child and Family Services as per the Provincial/Territorial Protocol on Children, Youth and Families Moving Between Provinces and Territories; Support staff by attending meetings with legal counsel; attend Court to support and provide staff feedback; present evidence in Court as required; Supervise the disclosure team and custody access specialist; Oversee central registry admin support; Monitor expenditures in areas of responsibility and manage spending; Ensure staff members are aware of their financial responsibilities; Ensure optimal efficiency of use of human and fiscal resources; Support the development of an environment that encourages equity, diversity and inclusion; Ensure that new staff become oriented to their positions, both the delivery of Child Protection services and the policies they must follow as employees of Government of PEI, including harassment, attendance, social media, etc. Schedule staff, including for unusual or round-the-clock work requirements, sometimes on short notice; Plan for staff training and development; and other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:




Master of Social Work degree supplemented by considerable experience or a Bachelor of Social Work degree supplemented by extensive experience. Experience is required in Social Work and prior experience in child protection is preferred Eligible for registration with the PEI Social Work Registration Board and for delegation under the Child Youth and Family Services Act and the Adoption Act*.
Evidence of progressive development of leadership experience. Excellent oral and written communication skills. A valid PEI driver's license with access to a reliable vehicle. A good previous work and attendance record and acceptable Criminal Record Check, Vulnerable Sector Check and Child Protection Record Check. Knowledge child development, family dynamics, impacts of abuse and neglect on children, community resources, trauma and its effect on children's well-being, separation and loss, mental health and addictions issues and their impacts, and the importance of permanency planning for children. Skills in risk assessment, interviewing, communication, case planning, case management, clinical assessment, critical thinking, group work, crisis intervention, collaboration, cultural competence, computer literacy, documentation and time management. Supervisory skills, such as coaching, planning, change management, program development and evaluation Ability to understand and interpret the Child Youth and Family Services Act, An Act Respecting First Nations, Inuit and Metis Children, Youth and Families, the Adoption Actand other related legislation, policies and procedures. Training in use of Structured Decision Making, Sep Wise Joint Interviewing.

Other Qualifications:




Knowledge of other risk assessment tools.
