SUMMARY:
The
Animal Control Officer
Reports to and works under the direction and supervision of the Program Supervisor- Community Health & Wellness.
PURPOSE & SCOPE OF THE POSITION:
To assist the Animal Control team in the performance of operational duties in regard to animal control, animal welfare, shelter care and maintenance, prevention and promotion as it relates to Six Nations of the Grand River Community's health and wellbeing.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Requirements:
Minimum Grade 12 education
Animal control services field experience an asset
Strong knowledge of and experience with Six Nations community or other Indigenous communities and understanding of importance of culture as foundation
Good communication and time-management skills
Knowledge of animal behaviour an asset
Understands the importance of confidentiality, able to work with tact and discretion
Must have a valid Class "G" driver's license and reliable transportation
Other Related Skills:
Must possess a knowledge of the Six Nations community, its culture and traditions, and various service agencies
Strong organizational skills and, able to work independently and work cooperatively with other service providers
Knowledge of surrounding SPCA, Rescue Centre, Animal Welfare agencies is an asset
Strong organizational skills and, able to work independently and work cooperatively with other service providers
Ability to maintain compassion with animals
High level of computer skills - Microsoft Office - MS Word and Excel
Must have criminal record check

POSITION DESCRIPTION - HEALTH SERVICES
POSITION TITLE:
Animal Control Officer
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:
Reports to and works under the direction and supervision of the Program Supervisor- Community Health & Wellness.
PURPOSE & SCOPE OF THE POSITION:
To assist the Animal Control team in the performance of operational duties in regard to animal control, animal welfare, shelter care and maintenance, prevention and promotion as it relates to Six Nations of the Grand River Community's health and wellbeing.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Technical Functions:
Responding to calls from the Six Nations Police, or other Six Nations public official/resident to pick up stray dogs/cats to the extent that they may be confined or captured in suitable facilities. This includes:
+ Investigating complaints that may arise regarding dog/cat control at Six Nations of the Grand River
+ Responding to citizen complaints concerning stray domestic animals, issue warnings to owners; and impound lost, homeless and dangerous animals
+ Providing required and reasonable care for the dogs/cats while in their custody i.e. food, water, shelter
+ Ensures quality of care of animals confined (maintenance, veterinary attention to sick/injured animals) Establishing protocols with relevant services regarding emergency services, rabies control and other pertinent reasons
Detaining a dog/cat when it is in the best interest of Six Nations residents or at the request of a Six Nations Police Officer or following the impounding period
Informing Six Nations Public Health officials of complaints or action taken, as it relates to the detaining or euthanizing of a dog/cat, within 2 business days of the occurrence
Willingness to work after hours as required - weekdays and weekends
Performs other related duties as may be required
Assists in monitoring, evaluating and enhancing programming
Tracks and informs supervisor of incidents while following protocols
Communications Functions:
Meet with the Supervisor for guidance and approvals
Monitor compliance to standards
Participate in ongoing staff education/training
Possess strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
Attends staff meetings
Responding to community member inquiries
Administrative Functions
:
Provide complete records, as required that clearly identify the relevant dog/cat services on a monthly basis
Reports are completed and submitted by adhering to deadlines
Assist with evaluating programming for effectiveness against established expectations/outcomes
Follow annual work plan
Other Functions
:
Performs other duties as may be reasonably required
Provides support to the Six Nations Emergency Measures Plan by ensuring awareness of the Emergency Measures Plan and assistance as instructed by the Director of Health Services
