Job Description

Drivers within the Child and Family Services division will operate under the Direction of the Family Service Worker supervisors and will transport various children/youth in care of the Director of Child Protection to and from visits with family members, to school, to appointments and other areas as directed. On each trip, the driver will be responsible to ensure a safe, welcoming and comfortable traveling experience. This requires a great deal of skill in both the safe operation of a vehicle, as well as managing the unique needs of each child. Drivers must be prepared to assist with emergency situations that may arise.


Duties will include but are not limited to:




Pick the child/Youth up at various locations; school, daycare, foster homes, group home or the family facility, etc. Transport child/youth to scheduled appointments, visits, school, etc. This would be scheduled with the successful candidate, by the Family Service Worker Supervisor. Understand the needs of children in care that have experienced grief/trauma/ abuse/loss. Liaise with Supervisor regarding child/youths medical and/or behavioural needs. Use a Trauma-Informed Care response during discussions with the child/youth in the vehicle. All situations must be managed in a professional manner. This can sometimes be challenging due to language barriers and communication issues. Report any concerns or incidents of risk or harm to the supervisor immediately. This will be used by others involved in the child's case plan such as Social Workers. Uphold the confidentiality of children in care. Keep an up to date log of hours and kilometers travelled and submit to the supervisor on a regular basis. Document interactions with children being transported and report back to FSW supervisor. Report any incidents or concerns regarding the child to FSW supervisor. Perform pre and post inspection on vehicle to ensure it is in good working condition. Maintain and change vehicle parts to accommodate change in seasons (ie winter/summer tires). Ensure a safe and welcoming environment in their vehicle. Operate under Trauma Informed Care lens in all interactions with child/youth and family; other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:




Grade 12. Trauma-Informed Care training is an Asset. Valid PEI Class 5 driver's license (full license, with no G attached), third party liability insurance, permission to carry passengers, a safe driving record and be authorized to transport youth/children. Good driving record (driver's abstract). The employee is required, as a condition of employment, to provide a motor vehicle for the purposes of carrying out employment functions. The requirement is subject to review every 12 months as per UPSE Civil Collective Agreement. The employee must be physically fit to lift and carry children and install car seats. The successful applicant must have a good previous work and attendance record and provide a satisfactory criminal records check, vulnerable sector check, child protection record check, and a Driver's Abstract prior to beginning employment.

Other Qualifications:




Some knowledge of car seats. Some knowledge of child protection. Emergency First Aid and CPR. Maintain vehicle in good working condition - ensure it is safe to operation and in good working condition. Vehicle must have current inspection and be insured.
