REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:





The community standards worker reports to and receives directions from the Justice Director




PURPOSE & SCOPE OF THE POSITION:





The Community Standards Worker is responsible for updating by-laws of Six Nations Elected Council and providing public education and awareness programs and services in order to ensure the protection of residents and property; under the policies and procedures established by Six Nations Elected Council.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:




Technical Functions

Updating and integrating community feedback into community standards manual. Research local and national laws, legal precedents, past legal cases or other relevant information to assist with the proper development of the Six Nations Community standards. Development the community standards manual and education program. Will engage and gather feedback from Six Nations residents regarding the development of community standards. Will make recommendations regarding the safety issues arising from having no community standards in regard to the land, air, water, traffic, restaurants, zoning, public venues etc. Will use a strength-based and solution-focused approach with community and staff. Will liaise with local businesses, community organizations concerning safety issues. Will coordinate and facilitate community presentations and consultations to gather feedback on Community Standards. Will attend Six Nations Elected Council meetings when requested. Will keep and maintain clear records of work undertaken. Will have knowledge of the Haudenosaunee Principles and apply them in a team environment, with clients and community members. Will have knowledge and understanding of restorative justice and processes. Will have experience of working in partnership with other professionals, agencies and community organisations. Understanding of crisis and counselling intervention. Knowledge and experience of challenges and issues facing vulnerable, socially excluded individuals. Communicate complex legal developments, trends or cases in clear and concise language. Will develop promotional materials, like brochures or pamphlets, and more official documents, such as white papers and reports. Will attend the department's staff meetings and other agency meetings. Will attend the justice department's community and other promotional events

Administrative Functions




Represent Six Nations Justice Program at inter-agency meetings when appropriate. Answer telephone calls and responds to emails relating to the development community standards. Will adhere to program budget when planning activities. Create tracking sheet for phone call inquiries. Follow procedures and practices related to, but no limited to, case management, informed consent, confidentiality and record keeping. Keep monthly program statistics and reports to immediate supervisor. Keep the manager apprised of activities on a weekly and monthly basis both verbally and written.

Communications Functions




Ensures confidentiality is maintained. Provides statistical reports and recommendations. General understanding of communication procedures within an office setting. Enhances relationships with the community, education system, justice system, community resources and works in collaboration with existing community base programs and services. Foster communication and linkages with the community, community agencies/organizations to improve access and mitigate barriers to services and supports. Develop community advisory committed to seek assistance in the development and implementation of the community standards. Maintains confidentiality and ensures compliance by following the Six Nations Justice Department's policy and procedures. Participates in team approaches to resolving issues, conflicts and problems that may arise in the process of providing services, or consulting with stakeholders.



Other Functions




Performs other job-related duties as may reasonably be required by the Justice Attend and participate in scheduled training as directed by Justice director

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:





Minimum Requirements:


Possesses a bachelor's degree or master's degree in criminology, social work, psychology or a related field possesses a two-year college diploma with 5-10 years of experience in the justice or related Three-five years' experience working in Six Nations Has a high-level understanding of the mainstream legal and court High Level of Communication Skills: Interoffice, Telephone, and High Level of Computer Skills: Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, Power Point and Publisher High level of office and interpersonal communication skills Strong level of organizational skills for self. Must be a team-oriented player. Must have a valid G license.

IMPACT OF ERROR:





Errors in judgement and in the conduct of duties could lead to loss of credibility, poor public relations, confusion, duplication of effort and misinformation being given to the Director of Justice, Six Nations Council, Government Agencies and the public




CONTROL:





Guiding principles set by the Justice Department and Six Nations Council. Works within the administrative policies and procedures by the Six Nations Council for the Justice Department and other legislation provided by the respective governments.
