POSITION CLASSIFICATION

Maintenance Worker I

SELECTION PROCESS

Screening: Candidates will be pre-screened based on education and experience. Eligible candidates will be interviewed.

Interview: Candidates will be interviewed by the Manager of Maintenance and Senior Leadership Team.

English Proficiency Test: Candidates will be submitted to an English language test (Writing, Reading, Listening, and Speaking).

The English Proficiency Test is REQUIRED and will be considered a condition of employment, which means that any eligible candidates will be required to first pass testing. The candidates that successfully pass the test will move to stage two of the interview process. If candidate fails, will no longer be eligible to proceed with interview for position and will not be considered further in the selection process.

References: At least three (3) professional references will be required, and references will be checked prior to hiring.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

Senior Leadership Team

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Senior Leadership Team or the Maintenance Worker II, the, the Maintenance Worker I is responsible to perform maintenance duties as assigned; to paint and repair Resident rooms and other facility areas; to care for facility grounds including planting, landscaping, snow removal and general external maintenance; and, to complete other duties as assigned. Under direction of the Maintenance Worker II, assists in carrying out operational, preventative maintenance duties and repairs for the physical plant and its systems. In the absence of the Maintenance II worker will carry out duties and responsibilities. Ensures all safety and other requirements are maintained in the performance of duties, including Manitoba Health Standards for Personal Care Homes:

  • Works within the framework of the Golden Links Lodge\'s Mission, Vision and Values, and in accordance with its policies and procedures.
  • Respects Residents Rights at all times.
QUALIFICATIONS

1. Education and Experience
  • Two (2) years of experience in assisting with trades related maintenance work in institutional buildings required.
  • Proficiency in building maintenance trades practices will be tested, including electrical, plumbing, HVAC and refrigeration.
  • Demonstrated knowledge or experience in drywall, painting, and carpentry required.
  • Completion of a grounds-keeping or landscaping course is preferred, with one (1) year of experience in grounds maintenance required.
  • Successful completion of Grade 12 required.
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office required.
  • Valid Manitoba Driver\'s License and use of personal vehicle required.
Experience with HIPPO Preventative Maintenance Program preferred.

2. Other
  • Ability to read, write, comprehend and speak fluent English required.
  • Ability to read, understand and follow equipment manuals, schematic diagrams, etc.
  • Physically able to carry and transport tools and equipment on ladders and platforms up to 34 kgs; ability to handle heavier loads with the assistance of wheeled carts and other devices. Working from scaffolds, high level platforms and in confined spaces and enclosures is required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of WHMIS guidelines and interpretation of MSDS sheets required. Adheres to safety principles.
  • Available for on-call and occasional scheduling on evenings or weekends.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Good physical and mental health and manual dexterity required.
  • Clean, neat appearance, in accordance with GLL dress code.
  • Effective problem-solving skills.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills required.
  • All hires require a Criminal Record and Adult Abuse Registry check.
  • Understands and respects Residents\' rights and privacy.
  • Presents a courteous, cooperative and professional manner attitude to both Residents and staff while performing required duties.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES
  • Required to remove garbage from the garbage room on a daily basis according to established procedures.
  • Required to check the property and grounds on a daily basis for litter and garbage and remove same to the garbage bin.
  • Required to assist other departments with general concerns related to departmental equipment or the building operation.
  • Required to use and maintain tools and equipment in a manner consistent with good tradesman-like practice. Grounds equipment is to be kept in a clean and well maintained.
  • Required to move furniture, or set up rooms for meetings or Resident activities.
  • May be required to pick-up or deliver materials or items for the department / facility and be requested to assist with transportation.
  • May be required to pick up and deliver equipment for repair.
  • May be required to wash exterior and interior windows as assigned.
  • May maintained condition. Tools and equipment are kept as secure as possible at all times to prevent loss or injury.
  • Required to assist with moving equipment and furniture within the facility.
  • Assists with seasonal decorations as required, inside and outside the facility.
  • Required to transport Selkirk Laundry carts to and from the receiving area/basement. May be required to assist loading/ unloading the truck on delivery days.
  • Attends meetings as called by the Senior Leadership Team or designate.
  • May be required to assist in Resident Activity Programs including but not limited to: barbeques, garage sale, teas / bazaars, Christmas holiday events, etc.
  • May be required to change regular shift hours for a short period of time with proper notice, in order to facilitate work on special projects, routines or occasions / events.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
  • Required to work with a minimum of supervision after initial direction provided.
  • Works under the direction of the Maintenance Worker II
  • Receives direction verbally and/or through written Work Request Forms, work orders, preventative maintenance tasks, established routines, policies, and procedures.
SCOPE FOR INDEPENDENT ACTION
  • Makes decisions necessary to carry out duties and responsibilities within given direction on a day to day basis. Take appropriate action when issues or concerns with physical plant are observed, and notifies appropriate individuals.
MACHINES AND EQUIPMENT

Operation machines and equipment includes, but is not limited to:
  • Hand tools, power tools, radial arm saw, paint mixer, paint brushes/rollers/sprayer, air compressor, hand dolly, moving cart, fire extinguishers, drain clearing auger machine, grounds and snow clearing equipment.
OTHER
  • Provides regular communication with the Lead Hand - Housekeeping and Laundry, Senior Leadership Teamand co-workers as it relates to daily departmental activities, projects and long-term goals of the Department.
  • Demonstrates respect for Residents, their family members/ visitors and belongings required at all times.
  • Works as part of the Golden Links Lodge interdisciplinary team.
Performs other duties as assigned.

This term position may end earlier as outlined in your collective agreement.

This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred. A security check is considered current if it was obtained no more than six (6) months prior to the start of employment.
